Health and Safety Associate

Structural Steel Industry

Vancouver, BC

Contract Position

(8 hour days, 5 to 6 days a week)

Position Summary

Within a consultant business setting, the Health & Safety Associate is responsible for supporting a client within the industrial Steel Industry. Reporting to the HSE Operations Managing Principal, this position is accountable for a number of responsibilities ranging from overseeing health & safety for structural steel erectors, to managing all OHS requirements within the assigned location ensuring compliance.

Some Key Responsibilities

  1. Provides expertise and advice to clients, colleagues and management on health, safety and environmental issues within the Industrial structural steel setting;
  2. Act as a key advisor to the client project team and assist with risk and hazard identification and control processes.
  3. Assist in the implementation of client project specific safety plans.
  4. Monitor contractor health and safety performance through safety plan review, orientation, meetings, inspections and audits, as required.
  5. Verify contractor compliance through document and record submittals; training, equipment, safety talks and corrective actions, as required.
  6. Perform and document regular safety inspections/audits of the site, take necessary and timely corrective actions to eliminate unsafe acts or conditions and to fulfill the needs and expectations of the client.
  7. Assist with/perform on-site incidents/accidents investigations, as required.
  8. Liaison with internal operations staff and regulatory agency officials, as requested.
  9. Provide detailed, concise and professional internal and external reports, as required.
  10. Provide detailed and professional timesheets and other internal records.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned to support the operations team.

Qualifications/Requirements
  1. Diploma in Occupational health & safety or certification in a construction trade with equivalent experience;
  2. 5 to 10 years’ experience in Construction preferred;
  3. NSCO, GSC-CSC, CRSP, CHST or other designation preferred;
  4. Proficient with computer applications, tablets and the Microsoft suite of products;
  5. Strong working knowledge of the British Columbia OHSA and Regulations for steel erector projects;
  6. Field level safety audit and inspection experience;
  7. Excellent at managing expectations, shows initiative and can multitask;
  8. High-level of interpersonal skills, working in a team environment with effective communication both verbally and in writing.
