Health, Safety and Wellness Coordinator - Temporary Full Time until December 31, 2025

Core Function:

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Health, Safety and Wellness Coordinator to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the development, implementation and monitoring of health, safety and wellness programs to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. Engaging internal and external stakeholders, you will conduct safety audits, liaise with Learning and Development Coordinator on the development and implementation of internal education, assess workplace hazards, promote wellness initiatives to improve employee well-being and support return-to-work process for employees following an illness or injury. The ideal candidate will be committed to fostering a positive and safe workplace culture while ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and best practices.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a diploma or certificate program in Occupational Health and Safety, or a related discipline.
  • Thorough knowledge of provincial legislation (e.g., OHSA, WSIA, Human Rights Code, AODA).
  • Previous (health and safety) experience in a health care setting an asset.
  • At least two (2) years experience with WSIB and coordinating early and safe return to work programs.
  • Extensive experience with auditing and report writing, accident investigations, development and implementing policies and procedures, delivering training, managing worker insurance claims.
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; able to set and adjust priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, both independently and in a team environment.
  • Proficient in MS Office: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, Teams.
  • Satisfactory Police Reference Check (with vulnerable sector screen) result.

Language Requirement:

Good oral and written English communication skills; knowledge of Chinese will be an asset.

Responsibilities:

  • Be consulted as a subject matter expert on compliance with the applicable professional ethics, codes of conduct, and relevant legislation, such as the Human Rights Code, WSIA and OHSA.
  • Reviews all reported incidents and responds as necessary to ensure effective management, with timely notifications to the appropriate internal (i.e., JHSCs) and external stakeholders (i.e., Ministry of Labour, WSIB, etc.), as required.
  • Identifies workplace health and safety risk factors through work practices and safety assessments, and investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Analyses and tracks trends to initiate improvement initiatives in current health, safety and wellness programs.
  • Develops, implements and maintains policies and procedures to support health, safety and wellness.
  • Consults with treating practitioners, external occupational health specialists and WSIB to design suitable modified work programs and/or accommodations, and work with management to ensure a smooth return-to-work process for the injured or ill employee.
  • Maintains effective communication with managers, employees, and business partners (e.g., Employee/Labour Relations Advisors, internal/external stakeholders) to ensure alignment in the return-to-work process.
  • Assists in completing job hazard analyses and workplace audits.
  • Optimizes worker and team performance by evaluating job organization and task design to incorporate ergonomic principles and reduce workplace risks.
  • Implements wellness and safety awareness programs, using community resources such as posters, pamphlets and fact sheets to support overall safe and well-being.
  • Collaborates with the Learning and Development Coordinator to provide education and training on wellness and safety initiatives to internal stakeholders (e.g., employees and managers).
  • Ensures confidentiality and maintains accurate, concise records.
  • Other duties as assigned to support department and organizational initiatives.
