Health and Safety Officer

Permanent Full-time

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is located in Northeastern Ontario and serves approximately 6,900 students in 17 schools located in Greater Sudbury, as well as in Killarney.

Our School Board is host to and celebrates diverse cultures and is comprised of dedicated staff committed to high quality education that inspires and promotes lifelong learning. The Board is currently seeking a Health and Safety Officer to join our dynamic team.

Reporting to the Manager of Facility Services and Health and Safety, the Health and Safety Officer is responsible for the health and safety portfolio and works with the Occupational Health and Safety team to build a positive safety awareness and culture by guiding board stakeholders including superintendents, school administrators, supervisors, and all other employees to ensure worker safety is embedded into all practices.

The Health and Safety Officer is also responsible for developing the appropriate guidelines and procedures and provides sufficient and effective training to all board employees with the emphasis on reducing risk by anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling hazards and providing advice on safety related matters.

Essential Qualifications

Education/Certification

Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a degree in a related discipline (ex. Risk Management) along with a diploma or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent experience.

Asset: Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) or National Construction Safety Officer (NCCSO) certification.

Experience

Ideally a minimum of five (5) years progressive experience in a safety role preferably within a public sector environment with unionized employees.

Key Activities

  1. Manage the Incident On-line Reporting Tool, ensuring the data is complete and that submissions and responses are performed in a timely manner. Ensure that responses are thorough and complete. Prepare ad hoc reports highlighting to management trends and areas of concern, etc.
  2. Develop, implement, and evaluate health and safety guidelines, procedures and services in accordance with the strategic direction, operational strategies, applicable legislation and legal obligations of the board.
  3. Perform on-site safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective action, and implement follow-up assessments, and work with site staff to mitigate job site hazards.

Knowledge

  • Comprehensive understanding and working knowledge of OHSA and its regulations, related federal, provincial and local health and safety regulation as well as guidelines for Ontario school boards;
  • Current knowledge of relevant legislation and statutory requirements;
  • Practical experience in accident investigations and identification of safety hazards;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software.

  • Ability to work in a team environment.

Other

May be required to work outside of normal business hours and on weekends from time to time. A valid driver's license is required as well as access to a vehicle.

The annual salary range for this position is $77,019.00 to $96,287.00 with a comprehensive benefit package.
