Head of Engineering

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Our client, a well-funded, research—and product-focused generative AI startup in the video, entertainment, and media space, is looking to hire a Head of Engineering. This person will lead the Product, Engineering and Design team, primarily located in Toronto, ON and New York City.

We are looking for someone who has successfully scaled a high-growth start-up and thrives in a fast-paced, unknown environment. This person will be a people leader and technical expert working directly with the founding team.

The team's philosophy is to move at breakneck speeds, iterate, and build top-class products. This organization's investors include: General Catalyst, Bessemer, Khosla Ventures and YC.

Responsibilities:

1. Lead and Scale Engineering (current team under 10)
2. Drive Product Development (ship AI innovative products at scale)
3. Implement best practices (Taking technical and tactical decisions head on with the business objectives in mind)
4. Create a high-performance culture with top-level talent (hiring top of class engineers and maintaining a high level of product integrity)
5. Get your hands dirty in architecture, code review and sharing best practices with the team

The successful candidate will have experience in growth/scale, proven engineering, people and leadership acumen and have the desire to grow a rapid startup in an unknown AI space.

Please note that the successful candidate will be required to meet with the team in the downtown Toronto office at least 1x per week. We imagine that as the Head of Engineering, there is a likelihood you might spend more than 1x per week in the office.

Must Have Skills:

1. 5+ Years of experience as an engineering leader, driving and leading scale - you must have taken start-ups through rapid growth
2. Demonstrable experience building and leading an elite engineering team
3. Demonstrable experience making business decisions and driving growth as a hands-on leader

• Development: Python (FastAPI), JavaScript/Typescript
• Database: PostgreSQL
• Cloud and DevOps: AWS, Kubernetes
