About the role 

The Head of Engineering is responsible for leading Fable's engineering team, shaping the technical direction, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable, and innovative solutions. The role involves strategic planning, team management, technical excellence, and cross-functional collaboration to achieve Fable’s mission of making digital products accessible for people with disabilities.

Lead with vision & strategy

• Lead and manage multiple delivery teams, with a focus on execution and delivery.
• Collaborate closely with product management to translate product roadmaps into actionable engineering initiatives, focusing on user experience and customer satisfaction.
• Prioritize and plan for growth, focusing on team morale, optimization, and overall execution.
• Develop and implement metrics-driven decision-making processes.
• Cultivate a high-performance engineering culture that embraces hard work, accountability, continuous improvement, and a passion for accessibility.
• Partner with cross-functional teams (product, sales, operations, customer support) to ensure engineering outputs align with company goals, customer needs, and market expectations. 

Drive technical excellence

• Ensure the delivery of high-quality work, on time and within budget.
• Lead the modernization of legacy systems, ensuring minimal disruption and high integration efficiency.
• Foster innovation and stay ahead of industry trends, keeping Fable at the forefront of digital accessibility technology.
• Develop and implement a comprehensive data strategy, including data warehousing, data governance, and data security.
• Drive the research, development, and deployment of AI and machine learning models to solve complex business problems.
• Leverage data as a competitive advantage by implementing advanced analytics and machine learning models that provide actionable insights and drive business decisions.
• Build and maintain robust data infrastructure and pipelines that enable seamless data integration, accessibility, and usability across the organization.

• Manage, mentor, and scale a diverse and talented engineering team across multiple geographical locations.
• Attract and retain top-tier engineering talent, building a high-performing team that thrives on collaboration and shared success.
• Set clear targets, objectives, and KPIs to ensure alignment with business goals and individual growth opportunities.
• Foster a culture of continuous improvement by implementing practices that enhance the design and maintainability of the codebase.
• Prioritize efforts between new product development, scalability, and system robustness to meet growth demands. 

Ensure operational effectiveness

• Implement best practices to enhance codebase design, maintainability, and scalability.
• Prioritize efforts between new product development, platform scalability, and system robustness to meet the demands of a rapidly growing user base.
• Champion the creation and implementation of innovative technical solutions that directly impact business growth and product adoption.
• Lead technical product launches and ensure market readiness.
• Collaborate with the executive team to align engineering with Fable’s vision and strategic goals.
• Evaluate the technical landscape and make informed decisions about new technologies and platforms.
• Confidently predict and plan for future technical needs and market trends.
• Create and implement innovative technical solutions that drive business growth. 

 Qualifications and assets

• Minimum of 6 years of software engineering experience, with at least 4 years spent in technical engineering positions and at least 3 years leading engineering teams.
• Deep technical expertise in modern software development practices and technologies.
• Experience in both hands-on coding and leadership roles, with the ability to gain technical credibility with individual contributors.
• Proven track record of scaling engineering teams and delivering complex, high-impact products.
• Experience with our technology stack is highly desirable (MERN stack, Docker, Serverless, AWS, Auth0, Github, CircleCI, LaunchDarkly, Snowflake)
• Strong leadership skills with a history of building and managing engineering teams that hit or exceed their targets.
• Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, capable of fostering strong relationships across all levels of the organization.
• Data-driven mindset with the ability to analyze technical trends, track performance metrics, and make informed decisions.
• Proven experience in integrating legacy systems with modern architectures and managing rapid scaling in fast-paced startup environments.
• Stays current on AI/ML innovations and how they apply to your industry. Evaluate new techniques regularly.
