Job Summary

The Head Coach, Varsity Women’s Basketball, is a passionate leader, mentor, and motivator responsible for building and driving a competitive, high-performance program at Ontario Tech University. Focused on the full student-athlete journey, the Head Coach will lead the recruitment, development, and retention of top-level talent, while fostering a team culture grounded in excellence, accountability, and growth—on and off the court.

This role is central to shaping a program that competes at the highest level provincially and nationally, while inspiring pride and engagement across the campus community. The Head Coach will create a dynamic environment where athletes are empowered to maximize their athletic potential, excel academically, and grow personally.

As a key representative of the department, the successful candidate will be a proactive contributor to the university’s broader strategic goals—embracing and advocating for Ontario Tech’s values, planning processes, and commitment to delivering a world-class student-athlete experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES and ACCOUNTABILITIES

Program Management:

  • Develop, implement, and monitor the program’s annual operating plan
  • Prepare annual budget estimates and manage program expenditures in alignment with athletic department guidelines
  • Develop and oversee the competitive schedule, including travel and logistical planning, in consultation with the Athletic Department
  • Organize all team-related activities, such as games, practices, training camps, and team events
  • Lead and manage coaching and support staff, including hiring, supervision, and delegation of responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with all eligibility regulations as defined by OUA and U SPORTS
  • Support the academic and personal development of student-athletes in collaboration with Varsity Athletics
  • Monitor and support student-athletes' academic performance and progress toward graduation

Coaching & Team Development:

  • Set annual program goals to motivate individual and team performance
  • Coach and mentor athletes to reach their full athletic potential
  • Promote a positive, high-performance team culture aligned with university and league standards
  • Develop and evaluate comprehensive team initiatives, including:
    • Annual training and competition plans
    • Team culture, playing system, and game philosophy
    • Game-by-game strategies and practice plans
    • Regular player and staff evaluations through feedback, statistics, and team meetings
    • Participate in professional development and contribute to the broader coaching community

Recruitment:

  • Design and execute a comprehensive, national annual recruitment strategy to attract top-level student-athletes
  • Identify and build relationships with prospective student-athletes in accordance with OUA, U SPORTS, and institutional policies
  • Collaborate with the Registrar’s Office and academic faculties to support incoming student-athletes through the admissions process

Revenue Generation & Program Promotion:

  • Lead the achievement of program self-financing goals in consultation with the Athletic Department
  • Develop, market, and oversee Ridgebacks basketball camps and clinics, including staffing and program delivery
  • Seek and support opportunities to enhance the program’s visibility and financial sustainability through fundraising initiatives

Community & External Relations:

  • Engage alumni through outreach, events, and fundraising initiatives
  • Represent the program in media opportunities and provide access to players for media, events, and public appearances
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with the broader university community, families, alumni, governing bodies, sponsors, and coaching associations
  • Promote the basketball program through clinics, events, and community partnerships
  • Represent the university at conferences, provincial, and national meetings

Education:

  • Three year Undergraduate Bachelor degree or equivalent related experience to coaching is required. Minimum Coaching Certification NCCP Level III, or equivalent

Experience:

  • Minimum of three years coaching experience preferably at the University, provincial, national level, or equivalent
  • A proven record of integrity, high principles, and demonstrated skill in developing / motivating student-athletes both academically and athletically
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment, get along and work well with members of the department, supervisors and other employees of the university

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of academic system at the University level
  • Knowledge of OUA/USPORT associations

Skills:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and strong ability to recruit student athletes
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and efficiently
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Computer skills are an asset
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
