The Old York Tavern is seeking a passionate, reliable, and motivated Head Chef to join our team. We are a neighbourhood tavern with French and American brasserie influence. We are open 7 days a week for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch services. As a Head Chef, you will lead our kitchen operations with a focus on seasonal creativity, consistency, and efficiency, while maintaining a positive kitchen environment. This role balances hands-on cooking with team leadership, cost control, and collaboration with FOH management to deliver a unified guest experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all kitchen operations and staff
- Develop and execute seasonal menus and features
- Ensure consistency in food quality, presentation, and timing
- Monitor food costs, waste, and labour to hit targets
- Uphold cleanliness and safety standards (Health & Safety compliance)
- Oversee inventory, ordering, and supplier relationships
- Foster a respectful, communicative kitchen culture
- Collaborate on events, specials, and service adjustments with management
- Train and mentor cooks and junior staff
Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2–4 years experience as a Head Chef or Sous Chef in a fast-paced, quality-driven restaurant
- Strong knowledge of seasonal and local ingredients
- Proven ability to manage costs and lead a team
- Comfortable with scheduling, ordering systems, and prep management
- Clear, calm communicator and team leader
- Food Handler Certification (required)
