Job details

The Old York Tavern is seeking a passionate, reliable, and motivated Head Chef to join our team. We are a neighbourhood tavern with French and American brasserie influence. We are open 7 days a week for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch services. As a Head Chef, you will lead our kitchen operations with a focus on seasonal creativity, consistency, and efficiency, while maintaining a positive kitchen environment. This role balances hands-on cooking with team leadership, cost control, and collaboration with FOH management to deliver a unified guest experience.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Lead and manage all kitchen operations and staff
  2. Develop and execute seasonal menus and features
  3. Ensure consistency in food quality, presentation, and timing
  4. Monitor food costs, waste, and labour to hit targets
  5. Uphold cleanliness and safety standards (Health & Safety compliance)
  6. Oversee inventory, ordering, and supplier relationships
  7. Foster a respectful, communicative kitchen culture
  8. Collaborate on events, specials, and service adjustments with management
  9. Train and mentor cooks and junior staff

Skills & Experience

  1. Minimum 2–4 years experience as a Head Chef or Sous Chef in a fast-paced, quality-driven restaurant
  2. Strong knowledge of seasonal and local ingredients
  3. Proven ability to manage costs and lead a team
  4. Comfortable with scheduling, ordering systems, and prep management
  5. Clear, calm communicator and team leader
  6. Food Handler Certification (required)
