As a Hardware Sales and Stocking Associate, your primary responsibility is identifying and greeting customers to provide prompt, friendly and courteous service. Under a supervisor’s direction, you will have responsibility for stocking the hardware store, ensuring product is clean and well merchandised. You will grow your product and inventory knowledge to help direct customers to product in store and assist customers with general project needs promoting high levels of customer satisfaction.
Responsibilities include:
- Acknowledging customers and inquiring about customer’s project or problem and providing a solution.
- Cashiering and selling by accurately completing sales and returns in point-of-sale system.
- Assist customers by assembling orders and assisting with bagging and carrying out merchandise.
- Sharing information about sale and promotional items with customers.
- Directing customers to proper pick up area in the yard.
- Communicating professionally in person and by phone.
- Stocking and inventorying merchandise, as directed and ensuring store appears organized and clean at all times.
- Assisting with in-store signage of merchandise, such as price tagging.
- Cleaning merchandise and store areas such as vacuuming, mopping, sweeping and waxing floors.
- Assisting with grounds maintenance, with the exception of power equipment use as noted below.
- Watching for theft.
- Adhering to store policies, procedures, and promotions.
- Additional responsibilities as assigned, including making keys, mixing paint, etc.
Prohibited activities for students under 16:
- May not use of power equipment, including gas or electric chainsaws, string trimmers, lawn mowers, pipe threading equipment. May not operate forklifts or banding equipment. May not dispense propane. May not operate or ride in motor vehicles. May not use ladders or scaffolding.
- All activities listed above, but may use string trimmers and lawn mowers and may ride in or drive motor vehicles on a very limited basis and only with store manager express authorization.
Prohibited activities for students under 17 include:
Required skills:
- Willingness to approach customers and offer assistance to solve customer’s project problems and direct customers to product in the store.
- Willingness to assist other team members with stocking, cleaning, merchandising activities.
- Excellent listening and oral communication skills.
This position requires standing and walking throughout the day and includes occasional heavy lifting (often 50-60 lbs) with intermittent outdoor activities. May occasionally load merchandise into customer vehicles.
Explicit work hour restrictions for students under 16:
- Students under 16 may not work more than 3 hours on a school day or 18 hours in a school week. May not work 8 hours in a non-school day or 40 hours in a non-school week.
- Students 16 and older are not subject to work hour or work week restrictions.
Our operations are open 6 or 7 days per week, depending upon location. Schedule may require weekend and evening hours.
Success factors include:
- Overall sales activity.
- Average transaction size (sales dollars divided by total transactions).
- Gross margin on sales.
- Number of errors.
- Safe performance of job responsibilities.
