Haematology Day Unit Charge Nurse Band 6

The Red Cell Haematology Day Clinic, part of the Emergency Department (ED) Bypass pathway, delivers a range of specialist services including blood transfusions, apheresis transfusions, and venesections. Operating from 08:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and weekends, the unit provides care for patients attending for diagnostic tests, planned therapeutic interventions (such as transfusions, exchange transfusions, and intravenous infusions), psychology appointments, and urgent reviews for acute sickle cell pain episodes, all in accordance with individual outpatient and pain protocols.

Main duties of the job

You'll be working in a fast-paced, purpose-driven environment where your leadership will directly influence patient outcomes and staff experience.

  • Lead and coordinate daily operations within the Haematology Day Unit
  • Deliver expert nursing care, including blood transfusions, apheresis, venesections, and acute sickle cell crisis management
  • Support service development, clinical audits, staff training, and multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Provide mentorship and supervision to junior staff and students
  • Actively participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement projects

Job responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide expert, person-centred nursing care to patients with sickle cell disorder, thalassaemia, and other rare inherited anaemias in accordance with local protocols and national guidelines.
  2. Act as a clinical lead during shifts within the Haematology Day Unit, coordinating patient care and staff allocation to ensure safe, efficient service delivery.
  3. Perform and oversee clinical procedures such as venepuncture, cannulation, blood transfusions, apheresis transfusions, venesections, and intravenous therapies safely and competently.
  4. Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, develop and implement individualised care plans, and evaluate patient outcomes in collaboration with the wider multidisciplinary team.
  5. Support timely recognition and escalation of clinical deterioration in patients, ensuring appropriate referrals and interventions are initiated.
  6. Facilitate and support drop-in reviews for registered sickle cell patients presenting with acute pain, working within outpatient and acute pain management protocols.
  7. Liaise with consultants Nurse, ACPs, CNSs, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate diagnostic tests, investigations, and onward referrals for specialist care as needed.
  8. Promote and ensure effective infection prevention and control measures within the unit.
  9. Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation in line with NMC and Trust standards, including electronic patient records and incident reporting systems.
  10. Act as a mentor and clinical role model for junior staff and students, supporting professional development and competence in haematology nursing practices.
  11. Participate in daily huddles, MDT meetings, and clinical audits to support continuity of care and ongoing service improvement.

Person Specification

Education and qualifications

  • First level Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
  • Relevant educational or training qualifications, certificates, or demonstrable experience
  • Educated to BSc or master's level in a health-related subject, or currently working towards it

Skills and abilities

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to use initiative and take responsibility for clinical and operational decisions
  • Excellent communication skills across disciplines and agencies, with the ability to foster collaborative multidisciplinary working
  • Advanced organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks or projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Ability to integrate nursing knowledge and clinical expertise effectively in patient care and decision-making
  • Competence in using IT systems and software, including word processing and spreadsheet/database packages such as Microsoft Excel

Experience

  • Experience working at Band 6 level or above within a relevant haematology or related specialty
  • Demonstrable experience in managing patients with Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassaemia
  • Experience in the assessment and management of acute sickle cell crises
  • Experience in pain management, particularly in patients with haemoglobinopathies
  • Evidence of leading or contributing to service development, change management, and clinical leadership
  • Experience in conducting clinical audits, service evaluations, or participating in clinical research
  • Approachable, open, and supportive in communication and interpersonal interactions
  • Demonstrates effective management skills, including experience in team leadership and contributing to team-building initiatives
  • Self-motivated and able to work autonomously while maintaining a collaborative approach within a multidisciplinary and cross-site team
