OVERVIEW:

The Group Underwriter will support the sales team by providing timely and accurate risk assessments and pricing for both prospective and in-force group business. The successful candidate will receive hands-on training and development, gaining the expertise to manage ongoing underwriting tasks for an assigned block of in-force group business.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  1. Complete renewals and quotations for health, dental, life, and disability benefits.
  2. Assess risk and determine appropriate rates for benefit plan revisions, ensuring coverage aligns with risk exposure using established methodologies.
  3. Review new business enrollments for health, dental, life, and income replacement benefits to confirm alignment with original quotations.
  4. Maintain thorough documentation to ensure all key decisions and actions are well recorded.
  5. Evaluate insurance risks and establish premium rates for renewal and prospective groups in accordance with underwriting guidelines and authority limits.
  6. Prepare interim and other financial and benefit reports.
  7. Support other group underwriters with large renewals, revisions, and quotations as needed.
  8. Participate in organizational projects as required.
WHAT YOU WILL HAVE:
  1. While direct experience in group underwriting is highly preferred, multiple streams are available based on level and type of experience.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, business, economics, or a related field, and/or at least three years of relevant experience.
  3. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the adaptability to support the sales function.
  4. Excellent decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical abilities with high attention to detail.
  5. Strong commitment to accuracy and timeliness, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines within tight time frames, both independently and as part of a team.
  6. Ability and willingness to work from home, using video conferencing tools for collaboration.
  7. Self-motivated with a problem-solving mindset to navigate a steep learning curve.
  8. Proficiency in computer applications and strong numerical skills.
  9. A solid understanding of group benefits; familiarity with Alberta Blue Cross products is an asset.
  10. CEBS, GBA, or other underwriting-related certifications are preferred but not required.
