Job End Date Apr 30, 2026 JOB SUMMARYThe Graduate Teaching Assistant will play a key role in supporting students (~30) and instructors (6) in an online, case-based learning environment focused on infectious diseases. Primary responsibilities include monitoring and responding to student questions on the Canvas course page, assisting with course logistics such as assignment or scheduling updates, and marking student assignments or exams using a provided rubric. The TA will also provide feedback to instructors based on student performance and grades. A strong background in medical microbiology, immunology, and bacterial pathogenesis is essential, as well as proficiency in using online platforms like Canvas to support students’ learning.
Conferences or other conflicts with TA duties must be brought to the Course Coordinator’s attention as early as possible to maximize the chance of being able to make alternate arrangements.
This is a partial GTA position – estimated hours of work are 5 hrs per week.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUSReports to the Course Coordinator and is expected to work independently and to set own work priorities.
WORK PERFORMEDLack of careful attention to regulatory guidelines and approvals could suspend teaching activities. Lack of communication could lead to support problems and teaching session activities being affected. Failure to ensure safe working practices may result in safety being jeopardized for the incumbent, students and/or other staff members.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDThe Graduate Teaching Assistant works under collaborative supervision; communicates with teaching staff and reports to the Coordinator of PATH_V 417.
SUPERVISION GIVENThe Graduate Teaching Assistant provides supervision to students when appropriate; acts as a resource with staff and faculty.
QUALIFICATIONSCurrently registered as a full-time masters or doctoral student in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. Has a background in microbiology and immunology, particularly in bacterial pathogenesis and the immune response. Familiarity with clinical infectious diseases, including their common presentations and diagnostic methods is recommended. Additionally, an understanding of human anatomy and physiology, as well as comfort with digital tools and online platforms like Canvas, is recommended.
Ability to exercise judgment, initiative and perform duties in a professional and respectful manner. Team-oriented, committed and precise with the ability to demonstrate responsibility, professionalism and accountability. Good organizational and communication skills.
Required availability: Please note that TAs are expected to be available for the full duration of their appointment, including the exam period and for several days after for marking duties. TAs must be available to attend teaching & learning sessions, and fulfill other duties as required by the instructor. If you are not available for the duration of the course plus marking time, please do not apply.
COMPENSATIONThe hourly wage for this GTA II position is $38.65. GTA wages are as negotiated by the CUPE 2278 collective agreement.
