ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Yukon University is Canada’s newest university and the first North of 60. Yukon University is governed by a Board of Governors – overseeing financial and business operations of the University – and the Senate – overseeing academic operations of the University. These governing bodies are supported by the Office of the University Secretariat which is led by the University Secretary and General Counsel.
Reporting to the University Secretary and General Counsel, this position is one of two Governance Officers who together are subject matter experts in the areas of internal university governance, policy analysis, freedom of information, privacy, and records management. This position will assist with all University Secretariat functions but focus primarily on policy development, drafting, and review.
As a part of a small group that makes up the University Secretariat, the position works collaboratively with other team members to support the University Secretariat.

Essential Job Functions and Duties
Specific Duties:

  1. Guides and facilitates the formulation, review, publication, and implementation of institutional policies and procedures, including recommendations on involvement of key stakeholders and collection of feedback on proposed policy revisions in accordance with the University’s Policy Framework;
  2. Provides support, through the University Secretary and General Counsel, to the governing bodies of the institution (Board and Senate) including their relevant committees, working groups, and project teams;
  3. Assists the coordination of the University’s Access to Information requests process and ensuring legislated timeframes are met;
  4. Supports the University in the application of the records classification system and retention schedule, including working with all Faculties and Departments in the development and use of records repositories systems and services, management of and training in the records management system;
  5. Undertakes research at the direction of the University Secretary and General Counsel.

  4. Strong written/oral communications skills;
  5. Exceptional organizational habits and attention to detail;
  6. Knowledge and/or strong working relationships with Yukon First Nations is a very strong asset;
  7. Flexible and willing to work with sometimes demanding deadlines (i.e., some evenings and weekends).

Qualifications and Experience
  1. Successful completion of an undergraduate degree and/or post-secondary training in a related field (i.e., public administration, law, business, or human resources) and/or equivalent work experience;
  2. Training or certification in access to information, privacy, and/or records management is an asset;
  3. Experience working in a similar position within the government, NGO, or post-secondary field;
  4. Experience drafting a variety of documents including briefing notes, policies, procedures, and high-level reports;
  5. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
