About the Position

Lethbridge Polytechnic’s Centre for Teaching, Learning and Innovation (CTLI) is looking for a General Support Worker to join our dynamic team. Reporting to the Integrated Supports Coordinator, Learning Café, this role contributes to a vast learning support service model within the CTLI by supporting students with the development of foundational academic and writing strategies and providing first response support to instructors, staff, and students regarding Canvas, the learning management system (LMS), and Canvas integrations.

  • Direct student face-to-face learning appointments (online or in person) that reinforce foundational academic skills and English/writing competency.
  • Provide first response support for faculty and students regarding the LMS (Canvas).

Excelling in self-directed situations and having the creative confidence to forge new solutions to systems challenges are keys to succeeding in this position. This role also requires strong time management, decision-making, interpersonal, intercultural, and relationship-building skills and the use of flexible approaches to adapt to our clients’ needs and comfort levels.

Position Details

Here’s how the General Support Worker contributes to Lethbridge Polytechnic’s culture of innovation, excellence, and inclusion:

Direct Student Support – English/writing

  • Coaching on effective academic learning strategies and study practices.
  • Reinforcing and clarifying foundational academic skills or content.
  • Maintaining asynchronous interactions through email correspondence.
  • Coaching on the effective incorporation of technologies to support learning activities.
  • Support the delivery of Learning Café workshops focused on academic strategies for all students.
  • Mentoring at-risk students.
  • Supporting development of student core competencies.
  • Collecting, analyzing, and managing data and assessment/evaluation metrics to help inform decision making.

Digital Learning – Frontline LMS (Canvas) support

  • Provide first response support to instructors, staff, and students for Canvas and Canvas integrations.
  • Respond to and record work order requests received via telephone, chat, and email.
  • Resolve issues at time of reporting.
  • Efficiently prioritize, organize, and document various requests and urgent issues with a focus on timely, customer-oriented service.
  • Identify recurring problems and recommend procedures and/or standards.

Other Duties as Needed

  • General frontline support as required.
  • General office administration and support as required.

NOTE: The General Support Worker is required to be on-campus, remote work is not an option. Occasional evenings or weekends may be required.

Indigenization and Decolonization

  • Collaborates across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes, and support Lethbridge Polytechnic’s Niitsitapi Strategy.

Required Qualifications

  • A two-year college program related to a specific skill/content area with a particular focus on English with experience problem solving with educational technology (LMS support) is preferred.
  • Ability to problem solve with educational technology for frontline support for staff and students.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, inter-cultural, organizational, and technical skills in order to participate effectively in a dynamic team environment.
  • Creative and critical thinking skills when working with students with unique learning challenges or disabilities.
  • Develop and deliver creative, informative presentations to meet the learning needs of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong organizational and self-management skills, including the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and attend to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in Education and/or a related discipline (e.g., English, computer studies).
  • Teaching/tutorial experience working with adult learners from a variety of cultural or learning backgrounds is an asset.
  • Knowledge of effective academic strategies and their application in a post-secondary setting is preferred.
  • Demonstrated initiative to maintain awareness of current and emerging trends in post-secondary-level learning and to incorporate them into their work.

Salary: AUPE Class Level 5 Step 1 $21.12/hour
