Job description

Lead the Field team for the construction of a major Healthcare project. This role is directly responsible for effectively managing all construction phases, leading and developing a team consisting of, but not limited to, Superintendents on standard systems and processes, means and methods, to achieve the project goals through proper planning and implementation. The General Superintendent shall always support our Core Values and Safety as a top priority.


Reporting To: Field Operations Manager


Primary Responsibilities:


Administration

  1. Update the Field Operations Manager (FOM) on a regular basis of the ongoing status of the project.
  2. Drive results, project goals, and profits through strong leadership of Project Launch and Set Up.
  3. Lead and attend regularly scheduled manpower planning meetings with Operations leadership teams.
  4. Assist with the hiring, assignment, retention, and conflict management of Superintendents for the project in conjunction with the Project Executive and HR.
  5. Perform regular reviews with Superintendents of manpower requirements and planning to ensure accuracy and efficacy in workforce planning.
  6. Be a resource, morale booster, and mentor for all project Superintendents to pursue further learning and skill improvement and advancement.
  7. Evaluate the performance of Superintendents and assist with the training and development of future Superintendents.
  8. Ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  9. Ensure standards for Safety, Quality, and Project Environment are maintained.

Project Planning and Scheduling:

  1. Facilitate and participate in project start-up and close-out meetings.
  2. Lead site set up, temporary facilities, and overall site planning.
  3. Provide advice during project mobilization, start-up, construction, and demobilization.
  4. Ensure an efficient site organizational setup, including site office trailers, visual communication boards, and evidence of all Standardized processes and systems.
  5. Ensure all work and infrastructure support Safety Guidelines and Policies.
  6. Ensure that the site is practicing the Last Planner System to ensure that we are fully maximizing seasonal weather, subcontractor manpower, and deliveries, to perform the work in the shortest possible time.
  7. Ensure the site is practicing Lean construction methods to ensure an efficient worksite.
  8. Provide advice on site layout issues (i.e., underground locates).
  9. Assist and review structural framing systems, crane selection, pour schedules, etc.
  10. Participate in site meetings, from time to time and as requested and necessary (i.e., trade start-up, weekly/consultants, pre-pour, Superintendent/Foremen).
  11. Review pre-punch list and final punch list, as requested, with the Superintendent to ensure a satisfactory project close-out.
  12. Assist with coordination of seasonal (winter) site requirements.
  13. Assist, review, and provide advice on site issues, means and methods, critical lifts, etc.
  14. Prepare a written site visit inspection report and forward to the Superintendent and Project Manager for their respective review, follow-up, and action if required.
  15. Ensure that interests are not at risk.
  16. Understand the project contract and budget, assist the Superintendent and Project Manager in the assignment of additional resources to the project as deemed necessary for an expeditious workflow.
  17. Cultivate and ensure compatible and mutually beneficial on-site working relationships with all personnel, including clients, consultants, sub-trades, suppliers, own forces personnel, and the public in general.
  18. Perform regular site audits to ensure compliance with as-builts, maintenance, and effective document control.

Cost Management:

  1. Verify Superintendents' receipt of information to effectively manage project costs (budget, productivity control, etc.) and ensure understanding of the same.
  2. Ensure the Superintendents work with the Project Management team monthly to forecast, capture, track, and manage all project costs.
  3. Ensure that all Rentals have proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment, and ensure they are returned in a timely manner.
  4. Provide guidance for Superintendents with respect to Timecard and Purchase Order coding and documentation.

Safety:

  1. Work closely with Corporate Safety to ensure Safety & Loss Prevention Plan and the Building Life Program is effectively utilized on the project site.
  2. Ensure Superintendents understand and follow all safety policies and procedures.

Quality Control & Close Out:

  1. Ensure Quality Control remains of utmost importance, project site control documents are set up on site and that they are being completed and kept up to date.
  2. Ensure an understanding of project-specific requirements such as mock-ups and sign-offs are being properly maintained.
  3. Ensure the Superintendent and Project team drive towards completing the project on time with no deficiencies to ensure the client experience has been exceptional.

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience:

  1. A post-secondary construction-related diploma and/or a journeyman trade Red Seal certificate plus a minimum of 15 years related experience.
  2. A thorough knowledge of all aspects of construction, including, but not limited to, reading and interpretation of drawings and specifications, all trade disciplines, materials, equipment, weather, trade agreements, trade jurisdiction, negotiations, engineering, accurate material takeoffs, purchasing and cost control, schedules, QA/QC, and safety required.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication, organizational, and supervisory skills are essential as well as a proven ability to establish and meet cost-effective deadlines.
