Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) agreement.

Location - This role is in person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton.

Working for the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (KSR)

The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (KSR) is consistently ranked in the top 20 faculties of its type worldwide (QS World University Rankings). It is home to approximately 1400 undergraduate students and 130 graduate students. In addition to its four undergraduate degree programs, KSR also offers Masters degrees, a suite of graduate certificates, and a world-class PhD program.

Position

The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (KSR) at the University of Alberta is accepting applications for one full-time career status Academic Teaching Staff position (Rank, Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor) that will include 80% Teaching and Teaching Related Activities, 10% Service and 10% Research. A required area of focus for this position is coaching, with an expected breadth of teaching capacity and experience in other areas of kinesiology and/or tourism and recreation. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach and design an evidence-based curriculum that supports inclusive coaching to advance the practice and capacity of coaching professionals (coaching athletes of all abilities and genders in a range of sports environments). Preference will be given to candidates with a second area of teaching strength that complements our current composition of instructors and aligns with the teaching needs of our Kinesiology and/or Bachelor of Recreation, Sport and Tourism degrees (particular needs in: pedagogy/movement education, movement analysis (biomechanics, motor learning), adapted physical activity, recreation/leisure studies, sociology of sport/physical activity/recreation).

This position includes coordinating the Master of Coaching (MCoach) degree. MCoach coordination involves mentorship of MCoach students, working with KSR partners in Varsity Athletics, assisting students in finding coaching placements, supervising research projects/practicum exams in a cohort supervision model and organizing field placements to satisfy capstone project requirements. It will also involve relationship building and consultation with relevant organizations including the Coaching Association of Canada and the Canadian Sport Institute Alberta, as well as The Steadward Centre within KSR, to forge connections with their parasport programs.

This position requires in-person and online teaching and teaching-related activities, on the university campus, to facilitate students' learning and progress through their degree program as well as the operational needs of the Faculty.

Duties

Teaching and Teaching Related Activities (80%):

  • Provides in person and online instruction to undergraduate, graduate, and/or graduate certificate students;
  • Designs curriculum and learning outcomes;
  • Decides student evaluation methodologies for assigned course(s), monitors student progress, and provides timely feedback for classroom, laboratory, fieldwork and field placement requirements;
  • Ensures availability for student consultation within and outside of scheduled class, laboratory, fieldwork, or practicum times;
  • Supervises graduate-level capstone projects, and/or serves as co-supervisor or committee member for thesis-based students and/or undergraduate thesis projects;
  • Provides instruction, supervision and/or mentorship to students involved in community engagement (e.g., field placements);
  • Participates in inter-professional teaching activities and/or coordinates activities and instructors in shared courses;
  • Contributes to content for incoming student orientation activities;
  • Participates in scholarly teaching by remaining current and competent in the assigned course content, course design and instructor performance in the classroom or clinical/fieldwork setting;
  • Engages in teaching-related administrative duties;
  • Attends orientations, academic-specific meetings or retreats, and course-related meetings and other activities related to teaching assignments;
  • Other clearly defined teaching activities as appropriate, assigned, and agreed to at the time of appointment or during subsequent annual assignments;
  • Fosters relationships with relevant national/international/community organizations to inform student coaching placements and coaching curriculum.

Service to the Faculty (10%):

  • Participates in the governance of the Faculty through committee membership related to teaching and scholarship (e.g., ATSEC; Graduate Programs Committee);
  • Administrative work associated with MCoach Coordination.

Research (10%):

Research may be focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning or in the discipline area of the teaching professor. Such activities are expected to typically be in a co-investigator/collaborator role and may include:

  • Pursuing or securing research funding as lead/co-lead investigator;

The degree of voluntary participation in other research and/or scholarly activities may vary across ATS members, and from time to time, and will be considered supplementary to the ATS member's primary University responsibilities (i.e., not recognized for merit or promotion).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed PhD Degree in Kinesiology or related field.
  • Experience as a coach.
  • Recent and relevant experience as a primary instructor in post-secondary (University and/or College) teaching at the undergraduate/graduate level with a demonstrated high level of competence (courses specific to coaching are considered an asset).
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, indigenization (EDI+I), and decolonization within their teaching practice.
  • Content expertise in the specified topic areas.
  • Ability to design and/or select, as well as administer effective assessments.
  • A commitment to learner-centred innovative teaching and learning practices, and continuous quality improvement.
  • A commitment to the creation of safe and supportive learning and working environments, including knowledge of and commitment to KSR and U of A equity, diversity and inclusivity (EDI) policies and practices.
  • Ability to collaborate and engage in shared decision-making.
  • Demonstrated accountability and responsibility for carrying out duties and activities assigned and/or agreed upon.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Parasport coaching experience or scholarship is considered an asset.
  • Relevant certifications in content areas of instruction (e.g., chartered professional coach) will be considered an asset.
