Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Responsible for transporting freight across dock area to/from trailers for loading, ensuring safety of freight being moved, and maintaining freight records. As a Freight Handler, flexibility regarding shifts will be required.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment including but not limited to forklift, electric pallet jack, and hand truck.
  2. Verify documentation matches freight description (e.g., type, weight, hazardous materials), using current electronic or manual system.
  3. Follow all safety and loading protocols/policies/procedures utilizing appropriate tools and resources (e.g., straps, boards) to plan and organize the loading sequence of freight and secure freight.
  4. Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary.
  5. Understand and follow all safety policies and procedures to eliminate risk (e.g., chemical spills, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System).
  6. Complete assigned tasks by following all policies and procedures (e.g., yard check).
  7. Assist customers with freight and freight documentation as needed.
  8. Perform general housekeeping indoors and outdoors (e.g., maintaining cleanliness of facility, trailers).
  9. Assist with mentoring of new hires (e.g., freight handlers).
  10. Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures.
  11. Perform other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  1. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Prior experience in warehousing, freight handling, forklift operation and/or cross dock.
  3. Must possess or be able to obtain a forklift certificate within the probationary period.
  4. Ability to lift/carry hand freight of varying weights (e.g., lift dock plates weighing approximately 100 pounds, open trailer doors requiring approximately 75 pounds of lift force).
  5. Ability to bend, twist, squat, push/pull freight throughout shift.
  6. Able to perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
  7. Able to work alone or as a team member.
  8. Able to follow instructions and complete required education (in person and computer).
  9. Strong problem-solving skills with strict attention to detail.
  10. Basic computer skills and ability/willingness to learn new applications, software, systems, and equipment as required.
  11. Good verbal, reading, and written communication skills.
  12. Bilingual (English/French), preferred; Quebec, required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Hours may vary due to operational need.
  2. Must be able to hear at a level which would allow recognition of safety devices such as horns, backup signals, and machinery in the potentially congested work environment of a loading dock, trailer, and the yard.
  3. Dock environment; exposure to varied weather conditions, exhaust, fumes, dust, noise.
  4. Frequent contact with service centre personnel; fast-paced; deadline oriented.

Shift: Monday- Friday, 19:00-03:30
