Description

WinSport Summer Camps is seeking a dynamic and passionate individual for the position of Freestyle Snowboard Instructor. If you have a genuine interest in working with youth, developing young athletes, and a commitment to excellence we invite you to apply.

In a fun summer camp environment you will develop your athletes' fundamental freestyle skills on trampoline and dry slope, as well as provide exceptional outdoor experiences in other sports and activities that cross-train skills such as balance and coordination.

As a camp freestyle instructor your primary role is to work with freestyle camp participants and provide a fun, welcoming, and safe environment to develop new freestyle skills, social skills, and recreate in the great outdoors. This camp runs Monday through Friday and will include 90-180 minutes of dryland freestyle instructing per day alongside instructing other sports and camp activities that WinSport has to offer, such as Soccer, Gaga-ball, and exploring in Eastlands.

Responsibilities

  • Be mindful of the inherent risks associated with snowboarding and conduct work accordingly.
  • Understand the inherent risks within the context of terrain parks and demonstrate skills safely.
  • Understand the inherent risks associated with freestyle training facilities: Trampolines, Super Tramp, and dry slope.
  • Make decisions that prioritize safety, following WinSport safety policies and procedures.
  • Provide lessons tailored to guests’ skill levels and goals based on training from CSIA or NCCP/Freestyle Alberta.
  • Plan, lead, and modify sports-based programs daily, operating both independently as a group leader and collaboratively with others.
  • Ensure the Alpine Responsibility Code and Terrain Park etiquette is covered in all snowboard lessons.
  • Maintain accurate class cards, including recording each child’s secure pick-up code for safety.
  • Actively contribute to a safer workplace by identifying hazards and risks.
  • Work with people of all ages and abilities.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude, strong communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Represent WinSport professionally and courteously.
  • Maintain an understanding of all snowboard products to assist guests and make recommendations for future lessons.
  • Mediate conflicts among participants using principles of healthy play training.
  • Exhibit a passion for summer and winter sports and for helping students develop their skills.
  • Deliver clear and concise lesson content tailored to guests’ needs.
  • Demonstrate leadership by providing quality instruction and a positive guest experience in all camp activities.
  • Provide a high standard of technical knowledge in Freestyle snowboarding.
  • Understand the LTAD and Sport for Life sport development models relevant to the group being instructed.
  • Utilize positive-first feedback strategies that empower guests and fellow instructors.
  • Engage in non-teaching duties including hill set-up and take-down, rental shop assistance, lesson check-in, waiver confirmation, and school group organization.
  • Seek guidance and leadership from Team Leads in instructional settings.
  • Evaluate athletes and administer an off-season training program for participants appropriate to their stage of development.
  • Be proactive and responsive to the team’s needs.
  • Adjust communication and skill development strategies to fit guests’ needs.
  • Assist with accommodating guest needs with a focus on service, problem-solving, and adaptability.
  • Demonstrate safe work practices at all times by adhering to WinSport safety policies.
  • Report all safety hazards/concerns within the work environment.
  • Review all OH & S notices/meeting minutes as they are distributed or posted.

Qualifications

  • Available to attend Team Member training (Sunday June 22, 2025 – Thursday June 26, 2025)
  • Must be available Monday-Friday for 9 out of 10 weeks during the operational calendar from July 2 to August 29.
  • Availability for scheduled shifts between 07:30 am – 05:00 pm Monday – Friday.
  • Current criminal record check with vulnerable sector search.
  • Freestyle Fundamentals course and air 1 required.
  • Previous experience in instructing freestyle snowboarding.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Experience instructing youth and developing freestyle snowboarding skills.
  • Experience working with children and youth in camp or day program environment is an asset.
  • Valid Freestyle Alberta membership required (Valid July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025).
  • Current First Aid and CPR C required.

Physical Demands

  • The job frequently requires lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing more than 20 lbs.
  • Physical effort requiring manual dexterity is frequently required.
  • Physical work pace and/or exertion requires somewhat rapid movement and effort.
  • Work outdoors in variable weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Maintain a high level of positive energy throughout the day.
  • Frequently expected to lift, carry, throw, push, or pull sporting equipment.
