Department: Environment and Natural Resources
The mandate of the Department of Environment and Climate Change is to manage land, water, air, wildlife, and forests. This includes promoting, planning, and supporting the wise and sustainable use of natural resources, and protecting, restoring, and stewarding the environment for the social and economic benefit of all Northwest Territories residents.
The Forest Resources Technician is responsible for the supervision of forest data collection and other duties related to field work for the Division's seasonal programming. This support will ensure effective implementation of the Division's field activities relating to forest management and planning. The position will be in place seasonally, typically for 6 months, from April to September. The position reports to the Operations Forester.
With direction from the Operations Forester, the Forest Resources Technician supervises a small team of casual employees charged with the collection of forestry field data. The incumbent will provide crew management, ensure production quotas, and conduct quality assurance during the field season, among other activities. The data collected through these programs will increase the Division's knowledge base regarding forest change and sustainability and will have an impact on decision making by forest managers.
Additionally, the incumbent will assist with planning and preparation for various field projects, conduct report writing, provide data clean up and compilation, as well as offering GIS and database management assistance. The Forest Resources Technician will work closely with the Division's foresters to fill a vital role that ensures its field programming is executed safely, effectively, and efficiently.
This headquarters position is located in Hay River, but activities are territorial in extent and support all five regions (Beaufort Delta, Sahtu, Dehcho, South Slave and North Slave).
These knowledge, skills, and abilities are most commonly acquired through completion of a diploma in Forest Management or a related field.
