Job Description
Position Purpose summary:
The Food Bank Coordinator is responsible for the oversight and coordination of the Food Bank (food procurement, donation management, purchasing and re-packaging). Planning and supervision will include relevant volunteers and the development and maintenance of community contacts, partners, and collaborators. The Food Bank Coordinator will actively work to keep volunteers informed and staff up to date regarding area services as well as promoting a holistic approach to client service.
Accountabilities
Operations and Programming
- Actively promote a positive environment across all programs, ensuring all individuals (volunteers and participants) are treated with dignity, courtesy, and respect.
- Oversee and coordinate all food bank operations – not limited to coordinating food procurement, receipt of donations, community food drives, inventory sorting, management and organization and re-packaging for distribution.
- Have input on new Community Ministries programming as needed to ensure ministry unit objectives are accomplished.
- Schedule, conduct and oversee qualified volunteers who administer the initial intake application for food Bank services, and screen clients for general emergency assistance, including food, clothing, household needs, referrals etc.
- Drive the ministry units’ Cargo van and pick up, load, and unload various goods to be distributed through the food bank; assist with client food delivery where applicable.
- Evaluate food inventory and determine food distribution amounts; process food orders with purchase food items to restock the food bank, lunch program complete weekly food list for Food4All.
- Liaise with Railside and coordinate monthly food delivery/pickup.
- Work with other family services staff to maintain, promote and improve the profile of The Salvation Army in the community.
- Organize and sort food according to dates utilizing, FIFO (First in First Out).
- Network with other TSA, government, community social service providers, Schools, and other donor groups to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and programs.
- Maintain a neat, tidy, and safe work area while ensuring that all areas are organized and tidy at the end of each shift, i.e., garbage and recycling materials are stored appropriately and put out for curbside pick-up.
- Assist with the Tuesday Outreach Program ( Kitchen Helper, Food distribution etc.) as needed.
- Check and tidy up the washrooms and ensure they are clean prior to the end of each shift.
Administration
- Maintain accurate records of refrigerator and freezer temperatures and report any issues to the supervisor.
- Maintain accurate records of all food bank related donations and purchases coming into Family Services and being provided to families through our food bank.
- Complete initial food intake for all clients accessing the Food Bank.
- Maintain accurate records of client and participant information for entry into Link2Feed and The Salvation Army Client Management System (CMS) while maintaining confidentiality.
Health and Safety
- Ensure that the Food Bank is maintained regarding appearance, condition and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
- Maintain valid Safe Food Handling Certification.
- Assist with ensuring the safety and comfort of the Food Bank by maintaining cleanliness and food safety etc.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Critical Relationship Management
Perform other related duties as required.
Internal
Governance Boards and Councils:
- Corps Officer, supervisor, volunteers, staff.
External
- Community (donors), Vendors (suppliers), Food Banks Canada.
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY
- This position reports directly to the Corps Officer as well as the Community and Family Services Manager (on-site supervisor).
- May demonstrate work methods to volunteers.
Financial And Materials Management
- Assist with food bank materials management such as donations/product flow and distribution of same.
Working Conditions
- This is a part-time position based on 24 hours per week.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required, some weekend and evening work may be required.
- The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
- Be able to lift/move up to 50 pounds.
- This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently; working in a standing position for periods of time; the ability to climb a ladder to access shelving.
- Travel within Northumberland County is associated with this position. Required to drive a Salvation Army program vehicle.
Normal hours of work: 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and Tuesday 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Education And Experience Qualifications
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of a Community College Diploma in Social Service Worker or equivalent in related field.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including experience working with multi-barriered persons, individuals with mental health issues a variety of social service programs.
- Knowledge of Food Bank operations, providing delivery services, working in a community meal program and willingness to learn more.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, personal vehicle required and insurance, current copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- Knowledge of applicable rules and regulations regarding food preparation and/or nutrition and knowledge and skill in the application of safe food handling and sanitary requirements.

- Ability & willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening with vulnerable sector search.
- Ability and willingness to provide a valid Safe Food Handlers Certification.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $18.99 to $23.73 with a maximum of $28.48. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
