FireSmart Coordinator

The City of Armstrong is seeking a qualified individual to support FireSmart activities including but not limited to Community Planning, Interagency Cooperation, Emergency Management Planning and Supporting the completion of the City’s Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan.

The contract position is supervised by the Community Service Manager and is located at the City’s administrative offices. The position is responsible for facilitation of FireSmart activities within the City of Armstrong and its out of area Infrastructure. The position will ensure that the FireSmart activities are supported, developed and implemented in accordance with the Provincial guidelines as well as with the direction and policy of the City of Armstrong.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acts as the main point of contact for the FireSmart Program
  • Seeks and administers new FireSmart grant opportunities
  • Coordinates public education and promotes FireSmart practices by participating in community events and outreach
  • Works with contracted provider to develop the CWRP
  • Liaison with First Nations, Local Governments and other levels of government such as BC Wildfire to identify opportunities to complete FireSmart projects.
  • Establish and direct local Community FireSmart Resiliency Committee to further establish FireSmart disciplines
  • Participate in the Regional FireSmart Resiliency Committee by strengthening information sharing, collaboration and further establishing FireSmart disciplines within our region.
  • Amend the City’s Emergency Management program to reflect the implementation of Section 41 of the Emergency and Disaster Management Act legislation
  • Create internal external and public communications related to FireSmart activities within the City of Armstrong in coordination with municipal communications staff
  • Attend the FireSmart Training Summit
  • Other duties may be assigned during an emergency that may differ from regular duties.
  • Performs other duties as required

JOB REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fuel management, fire prevention, and FireSmart practices
  • Working or educational knowledge of emergency ESS, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery programs and legislation
  • Ability to work under limited supervision in a position requiring a high degree of accuracy, efficiency and diplomacy
  • Two years of related leadership education and experience including facilitation
  • Experience in delivering educational and outreach materials to a variety of audiences
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in Policy Research and development
  • Grant writing
  • Local FireSmart Representative qualification or willingness to attain
  • Flexible in terms of work hours and job requirements; normal work week is 35 hours per week, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM; some evening and weekend work will be required
  • Valid BC class 5 driver's license
  • Satisfactory Canada Criminal Record Check

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Environmental Science, Emergency Management, Ecology, Community Development, Public Administration or a related discipline
  • Completion of Cultural Sensitivity training
  • GIS training and experience
  • Confident in communication, report writing, minute taking and presentation skills with strong interpersonal, public relations and customer service skills and a clear ability to obey and entertain confidentiality of information, documents and processes
  • Grade 12 diploma certifications or acceptable equivalent
  • I-100
  • S-100 and S-185 or WSPP-WF1
  • Level 1 First Aid
  • Completion of Wildfire Risk Reduction course
  • Punctual, organized and dependable; experience in office productivity software such as e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, databases and social media and other applications software

The hourly wage is $37 and 14% in lieu of benefits. Contract starts February 3, 2025 – September 15, 2025 at 35 hours per week.
