In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications):

Education:

  • Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

Note:

The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Experience:

  • Significant experience gathering, analysing, and interpreting ecological or natural resources data.
  • Significant experience in statistical and geospatial analysis.
  • Significant experience in programming in two or more languages, one of which must be C, C++, Python, Julia, or R.
  • Significant means at least two years professionally employed in the field, or graduate studies in environmental sciences, hydrology, engineering, or some other science relevant to the position.

The following will be applied/assessed at a later date (essential for the job):

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of experimental research theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of software development.
  • Knowledge of wildland fire science, or forestry, or ecology, or environmental science.

Abilities:

  • Ability to develop and implement scientific models by planning, executing, and maintaining computer programs in two or more languages, one of which must be C++, Python, Julia, or R.
  • Ability to plan, organize, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze problems related to physical science application development and develop solutions.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.

Personal Suitability:

  • Initiative.
  • Judgement.

The following may be applied/assessed at a later date (may be needed for the job):

Education:

Graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of natural or physical sciences related to the position.

Experience:

  • Experience in writing technical/scientific reports and peer-reviewed articles.
  • Experience in modelling wildland fires or fire behavior.
  • Experience in using remote sensing methods.
  • Experience with software development in the cloud: containers, serverless functions.
  • Experience using databases.
  • Experience applying machine learning tools and algorithms to problems in forestry, ecology, wildfire science or a related environmental science.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of fire danger rating systems in Canada.

Conditions of employment:

  • Reliability Status security clearance.
  • Willing and able to travel.
