POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager, Finance, the Financial Accountant is accountable for the accurate and timely preparation of journal entries, various reconciliations, supporting the month-end close process including supporting other accounting staff, recommending improvements to internal processes, and completing ad-hoc projects as directed. This position will also assist with ensuring that all A/P, A/R batches and monthly closing are correct and prepared in accordance with Port policy.


POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Prepares month-end journal entries and assists the Manager, Finance on journal entries, when required.
  • Assists with posting and reviewing processes for accounts payable (A/P), accounts receivable (A/R), accruals, and capital asset transactions, ensuring all necessary controls are in place.
  • Ensures balance sheet accounts, including payroll accounts, are accurately reconciled on a regular basis (monthly, quarterly, or annually). This includes identifying discrepancies, investigating causes, and making corrections as needed.
  • Maintains thorough and organized documentation of all reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting schedules as per PRPA guidelines.
  • Working with the Manager, Finance, develops detailed revenue and expense reports that support the organization's internal financial statements and conducts variance analysis.
  • Keeps track of grants and contributions, ensuring all financial obligations and deliverables are completed on a timely basis.
  • Manages and reconciles intercompany transactions and balances to ensure consistency and accuracy across different entities within the organization.
  • Ensures that all tax-related accounts are accurately reconciled and that tax filings are prepared correctly for all entities within the organization. This includes reconciling and performing reasonability on sales tax.
  • Work with IT and finance teams to identify and implement system improvements that improves the financial reporting process.
  • Working with the Manager, Finance, develops proposals on accounting treatment memos, best practices in accounting policies and work procedures.
  • Assists the Manager, Finance, in increasing the level of data integrity of transactions stored in the financial system (e.g., ensuring completeness and accuracy of customer and vendor information, closing out purchase orders when projects are completed).
  • Prepares for and participates in the internal and external audits of PRPA as well as the five-year special examination.
  • Completes other works, research assignments on behalf of the Manager, Finance and others, as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works predominantly in an office environment.
  • Regular, full-time position (37.5 hours per week).
  • Regular working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM with a 1-hour unpaid lunch break.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Formal Education

  • Post-secondary education in the Accounting or Business-related field.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have completed/are currently enrolled in the Chartered Professional Accountants designation program (CPA) or equivalent.

Related Experience

  • 3 to 5 years' experience in industry.

Other Requirements

  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail is essential.
  • Must be able to coordinate tasks efficiently and effectively, and the ability to prioritize, multi-task, work under pressure and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience in performing detailed reconciliations and a proficient understanding of accounting principles.
  • Ability to exercise tact, good judgment and discretion, and work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong initiative, work ethics and integrity required.
  • Able to obtain security clearance under Transport Canada's Security Clearance Program.

The starting base salary range for this role is $86,755 - $108,444.
