GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY

Performs three distinct, but related, primary roles: a business valuator who assesses the SaskTel Holding Corporation's potential investment opportunities, the finance governance prime who oversees the Corporation's existing investments and subsidiaries and an ad hoc analyst. As business valuator, the Accounting Manager conducts a full review of investment opportunities, which includes evaluating historic financial information and future business plans, identifying significant risks, determining a purchase price and recommending whether to proceed with the initiative. Investment opportunities may be national or international, tend to be time-sensitive, unique or complex in nature and may have a major impact on SaskTel Holding Corporation. As ongoing finance governance prime, the Accounting Manager monitors the financial and business performance of SaskTel Holdco's subsidiaries and investments, reviewing all ongoing financial information and Board of Directors' material, identifying and communicating key risks and issues, and serving as an accounting and financial advisor to SaskTel Holdco and subsidiary Board members and senior management. Ad hoc analysis requests are sporadic and can come from any department. It is often complex and confidential in nature, requiring detailed financial modelling with many iterations.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Fulfills a business valuator role for SaskTel Holdco's potential investments as part of the due diligence team. Conducts a full review of investment opportunities, which includes evaluating historic financial information and future business plans, identifying significant risks, determining a purchase price and recommending whether to proceed with the initiative to the SaskTel Holdco Executive and Board of Directors. Initiatives typically involve third party relationships such as partnerships, joint ventures or equity investments.
  • Interfaces directly with major financial and consulting institutions, and potential partners. Concurrent with the due diligence process, this manager deals with a third party review mandated by Crown Investments Corporation (CIC) for all external investments.
  • Monitors the financial and business performance of SaskTel Holdco's subsidiaries and investments as part of a governance team. Completes annual impairment testing and valuations. Reviews all ongoing financial information and Board of Directors' material, identifies key risks and issues to be addressed, communicates these risks and issues to Board members and subsidiary/investment senior management and serves as their advisor. Establishes and maintains a governance management and performance reporting process including quarterly reviews covering governance and business issues. Develops and maintains an understanding of subsidiary and investment businesses including relevant legal agreements. Arranges corporate funding for subsidiaries/investments, if required, and reports to SaskTel Holdco's Investment Compliance Committee to ensure that the Corporation does not violate Crown Investment Corporation funding approvals.
  • Deals with many internal and external parties and stakeholders. Investments may be national or international, tend to be time-sensitive, unique or complex in nature and may have a major impact on SaskTel Holding Corporation. External investments are closely monitored by SaskTel's shareholder and have a high profile within the Province of Saskatchewan.
  • Represents Finance on inter-departmental teams established to develop business cases for new and emerging technologies, researching business and financial impacts.
  • Provides accounting and financial advice to start-up ventures. This includes establishing appropriate accounting policies and procedures for these ventures as well as determining how SaskTel should report or account for them (i.e. consolidation, equity accounting, and cost accounting). Also provides ongoing accounting and financial advice to SaskTel Holdco's subsidiaries and strategic business units as required.

Qualifications

  • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA) is preferred. However, a Bachelor Degree in Commerce or Admin (majoring in Accounting or Finance) may be accepted with at least 5 years experience in the field.
  • Solid comprehension of pricing theory and principles.
  • Solid comprehension of business valuation and accounting theory and principles. Chartered Business Valuator training may be made available.
  • Strong planning, project management, analytical and research skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite with strong working knowledge of Excel (knowledge of Power BI is an asset).
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of management.
  • Ability to work in unstructured environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and high commitment to sharing appropriate information with internal and external bodies.
  • Strong commitment to professional development.
  • Must be prepared to travel out-of-province when required (maximum stay is not expected to exceed two weeks) and must be prepared to work extended hours to meet expected deadlines.

This is an on-site position located at the location(s) above. The successful candidate must be located within the province of Saskatchewan. Out of province/country candidates must be willing to relocate. Flexible work opportunities, in province, may be available.
