Field Health and Safety Advisor (Heavy Civil Construction)

Location: Edmonton, AB (9175 – 14 Street NW)
Hours: Permanent, Full-time, 44+ Hours per week, Schedule as per Operational Requirements, On-Call (Evenings & Weekends)
Requirements:
- NCSO designation (all courses current)
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
- Clean Driving Record
- CSA approved steel toed boots with 6” ankle support
Pre-employment:
- Drug and alcohol testing (swab-based test)
- Successful completion of Company Orientation and site-specific orientation
Reporting to the Safety Manager, this high-paced position is primarily responsible for providing field level health and safety support and building relationships with the entire construction and maintenance teams. The H&S Advisor also supports the Safety department within the office with safety orientations, safety training, drug and alcohol testing, etc.
Field Health and Safety Advisor Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:
- NCSO designation with a minimum 5 years’ experience as a safety professional in the construction industry.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations and Code.
- A passion for improving health & safety; energy and enthusiasm are critical characteristics.
- Highly developed leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively alone and prioritize.
- Must be a highly motivated, service and team-oriented individual with an attention to detail.
- Proficiency with database applications and administration systems, specifically Microsoft Office.
- Enthusiasm for challenge and new initiatives are prerequisites.
Field Health and Safety Advisor Responsibilities:
- Maintain awareness of amendments to the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Regulation and Code, and make recommendations for their implementation.
- Assist in developing and leading morning PSI and weekly safety meetings.
- Perform job site safety compliance inspections including hazard analysis, safe work procedures, written reports and recommendations.
- Ensure the timely completion of workplace incidents investigations/reporting to Corporate Office.
- Responsible for monitoring adherence to the company safety program by all Sureway Construction Group employees and subcontractors.
- Deliver new hire safety orientations and conduct pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
- Research, plan, organize and conduct training programs/seminars.
- Provide advice and counsel to management and other employee groups on a broad range of occupational safety issues and decisions.
- Periodically act as a team leader to special projects and/or health and safety committees.
- Provide direction and/or guidance to less experienced occupational safety personnel.
