Under close supervision, provides educational programs and technical advice to the community in the agriculture and natural resources area. Provides training, information, and educational programs. Plans and organizes basic classes, workshops, short courses, and special events (e.g., fairs, field trips) to stimulate interest in agriculture and natural resources. Conducts basic training classes and workshops. Answers general telephone inquiries from the public. Visits homes, farms, gardens, and other targeted clientele. Plans and designs educational exhibits and displays (e.g., home gardens) to illustrate ideas or to demonstrate new methods and products in appropriate areas of assignments. Recruits and trains volunteers and interested persons from the community for the study and promotion of agriculture and natural resources. Provides leadership and technical advice to groups in developing programs and activities. Collects field samples and enters data into the computer. Additionally, the employee will assist in coordinating activities related to the agriculture and natural resources program. Organizes and maintains community and school-based programs in agriculture and natural resources. Fosters agriculture and natural resources mission through presentations and demonstrations to the community, schools, and other groups in St. Thomas/St. John district. Collects data, analyses technical information, and writes reports. Conducts in-service training for CES staff related to agriculture and natural resources elements. Assists in field visits of agriculture and natural resources projects in the district.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and three years of experience in Horticulture, Agriculture, or related fields.

  • Ability to understand a system of policies and procedures.
  • Ability to apply principles to solve practical problems.
  • Ability to calculate basic mathematical operations.
  • Ability to read and write routine reports, grant applications, and give public presentations and correspondence.
  • Ability to plan and organize work efficiently.
  • Ability to work well with youth and adults and provide courteous service.
  • Skills in operation of an automobile, photocopier, computer, audio, video, and photography equipment.

Physical Demands

High-stress environment. High pressure to meet deadlines. Must be self-motivated. Must have the ability to be composed at all times. Must have the ability to sit for an extended period of time. Must be able to use a computer and common business software. Work requires occasional overnight travel. Work environment: The noise level in the work environment will be moderate.
