Job description

Hi, I'm Matt! I’m an educational consultant hiring an educational aide to work in-person with a family I'm working with (specifically, their 12 year old son)! It’s an interesting job, with a unique kid who's fun to work with - if you’ve got experience with kids on the spectrum or other kids with special needs, read on!

This kid is super awesome. He's 12, entering Grade 7, and highly gifted. He's passionate about a ton of things - technology, business, family. I love working with him, because he is so earnestly enthusiastic, and he loves coming up with ideas and then doing them!

But he's also had a really tough go of it, including some aggressive or violent incidents in the past. His family have done a ton of work since then, and he's doing really well, but he still does get frustrated and aggressive occasionally. He calms down and apologizes quickly, and his mom will support you in the first month as you learn to work with him. He has great relationships with his speech-language pathologist, and his recreational therapist, and works successfully with a tutor, and another aide – I love working with him!

We're looking for someone to support him up to 12 hours a week, in his home, and in the community. Bottom line: you're going to be hanging out, doing all kinds of things!

  1. Academic work at home
  2. Checking out cool museums
  3. Neighborhood walks
  4. Awesome ideas you come up with together.

This job is a great fit for someone:

  1. with at least 2 years experience working with kids on the spectrum
  2. who is trained and comfortable working with kids who can be aggressive (again, this is not typical, and more something that has happened in the past)
  3. with a lot of patience to listen - this kid loves to talk!
  4. who is creative, energetic, and comes up with new and fun ideas

You need to be available 10-15 hours a week, with a fair amount of flexibility.

You’ll be working with the rest of this kid’s team (which includes me, and a variety of professionals). This kid is one of my consulting cases, and I work with his team to help him in his academic work, and to help program his home time. When he and I work together, we sell stuff on eBay, scheme about Roblox games, and next up I'm teaching him poker.

A few details about the position:

  1. You're paid as a contractor, and only paid for your time with the student - there's no pay for prep or travel time.
  2. Most shifts will be at least 3 hours. If it's working great, longer shifts would be great.
  3. Timing might shift from week to week (but we'll work around your schedule)

This is a position where you’re expected to learn constantly! It’s good for people who like feedback, who are eager to learn more about special education, and who are kindhearted passionate learners who will generously share what they know with their colleagues, and eagerly learn from their colleagues' expertise.

Does that sound like you? If so we want to hear from you! Please make sure to complete all the screening questions to ensure your application is reviewed!

Thanks :)
Matt
