Job description

As an Estimator I, you will work within our Estimation team to assist in preparing cost estimates, project bids, and repair proposals. This is an entry-level role designed for a recent graduate in Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or Marine Engineering. You will gain hands-on experience in ship repair estimation, with exposure to project cost analysis, materials sourcing, and labor estimation. You will work under the guidance of senior estimators and managers, gaining insight into the complexities of the ship repair industry and learning to deliver accurate and competitive quotes.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 203 East Esplanade, North Vancouver.

What you’ll do

  1. Assist in Preparing Estimates: Support senior estimators in creating detailed cost estimates for ship repair projects, including materials, labor, and time requirements.
  2. Analyze Drawings and Specifications: Review ship drawings, technical specifications, and customer requirements to help identify repair scope and necessary resources.
  3. Collaborate with Project Teams: Coordinate with departments such as engineering, procurement, and production to collect data for accurate cost assessments.
  4. Vendor and Material Sourcing: Assist in gathering cost information from suppliers and subcontractors to support estimation and procurement processes.
  5. Documentation and Reporting: Prepare and maintain project documentation, including work breakdown structures, cost reports, and progress updates.
  6. Learning and Development: Engage in continuous learning, including company-provided training on industry practices, estimation tools, and shipyard operations.

What you’ll bring

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related field.
  2. Basic understanding of ship structures, repair processes, and relevant engineering concepts.
  3. Familiarity with MS Excel and project management software is advantageous.
  4. Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration across departments.
  5. Attention to Detail: Ability to work meticulously with data, ensuring accuracy in all calculations and reports.
  6. Must have a current and valid class 5 driver’s license. Local travel to off-site locations is required.
  7. Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors.
  8. Must be eligible to work in Canada.

This is a full-time permanent position because we have long term projects that need long term strategic support. The estimated salary for this position is $77,500 - $93,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
