Environmental Stewardship Coordinator

Position Overview

Take the lead in safeguarding New Brunswick’s natural heritage! As the Environmental Stewardship Specialist, you’ll manage impactful conservation stewardship projects, inspire a field team, and help preserve over 14,000 acres of breathtaking natural spaces. This role includes extensive fieldwork, innovative project management, and leadership opportunities to advance ecological sustainability and community engagement. Key Responsibilities

Stewardship and Conservation Leadership

• Oversee the care and management of over 14,000 acres spanning diverse ecosystems across New Brunswick, ensuring ecological integrity and long-term sustainability.
• Develop and lead scalable stewardship initiatives that enhance the Nature Trust’s preserve network and deliver long-term ecological benefits.
• Conduct regular site visits to nature preserves for annual monitoring, maintenance, and improvement efforts.
• Lead trail management initiatives, ensuring safe and enjoyable access for visitors.
• Update and adapt regional management plans to align with evolving environmental priorities.

Field Operations and Team Management

• Navigate various landscapes, ensuring safety and efficiency while adapting to dynamic outdoor challenges.
• Supervise and mentor field technicians, interns, and volunteers during the active field season.
• Coordinate workshops and volunteer training events in partnership with our Engagement Department, local communities, and environmental groups.

Project Development and Reporting

• Innovate and implement forward-thinking conservation techniques while delivering stewardship projects with measurable ecological impacts.
• Maintain detailed records, including monitoring reports, maps, and management plans, to support strategic decision-making.
• Collaborate with the Stewardship Manager to secure funding through grant proposals and detailed reports.
• Maintain accurate records for monitoring reports, GIS mapping, and stewardship strategy updates.
• Act as the key liaison between the Nature Trust, stewardship groups, and community stakeholders.

Community Engagement and Advocacy

• Cultivate partnerships with Indigenous communities, local organizations, and underrepresented groups to foster shared environmental stewardship.
• Support volunteers and the Engagement Department with technical training and field activities.
• Foster connections with preserve visitors, ensuring low-impact recreational use aligns with conservation goals.

What We’re Looking For

Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in environmental management, ecology, or related field, (or equivalent experience), with 2+ years in fieldwork, leadership, or project management. Strong mentoring and supervision skills for seasonal teams, interns, or volunteers.

Fieldwork Skills: Capability for strenuous tasks such as carrying equipment, hiking long distances, and working in remote conditions. Wilderness First Aid and chainsaw safety certifications desirable, or attainable within six months.

Technical Skills: Proficiency in GIS tools and experience in habitat restoration, invasive species management, or biodiversity monitoring. Drone operation experience is a plus.

Communication: Ability to engage diverse stakeholders, including Indigenous groups, volunteers, and local communities. Bilingual in English and French is highly desirable.

Local Expertise: Knowledge of New Brunswick’s ecosystems, environmental policies, and conservation practices.

Other Requirements: Valid Class 5 driver’s license and willingness to travel across New Brunswick, including potential overnight stays.

Start Date: February, 2025 (flexible)

Length: Salaried, full-time

Salary: $40,000 – $54,000 (commensurate with experience and funding availability)
