Job description

Part-Time position working from 9:00am - 1:30pm daily, Monday - Friday for a total of 22.5 hours per week at our Weber, Kitchener location.

In this position, you would be working to support in a preschool classroom of 8 children, quite a few of whom have special needs and/or behavioural concerns. You will be working with the teacher to encourage the children to be an integrated part of the classroom as well as aiding in teaching expected life skills and language skills suitable for that age group. There is a child within this group that requires G-tube feeding which is expected to be administered by the person in this role.

Responsibilities:

  • Works collaboratively within a team at the child care program setting to provide an inclusive program for children with developmental and behavioural needs.
  • Collaborates with other agencies and partners to identify individual strengths and goals for individual children.
  • Assists the centre team in the planning, development and implementation of children's Individual Support Plans. Delivers interventions or strategies as set out in the Individual Support Plan.
  • Supervises and assists individuals or groups of children during daily routines and activities.
  • Role models behaviour management strategies for co-workers and promotes discussion and problem solving within the team to best meet the needs of the children identified as requiring enhanced support.
  • Assists children with personal and medical care which may include administration of medication, feeding, dressing, toileting, hygiene, lifting and positioning and assistance with mobility.
  • Understands and compiles with Provincial and Pluto Daycare Child Care Standards.
  • Plans and implements consistent child centred programs in accordance with Pluto Daycare and provincial standards.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to children's learning and is responsive to research.
  • Understands each child and their family's specific needs and plans for successful outcomes.
  • Self manages on-going professional development.
  • Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma (Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Worker, Personal Support Worker, Developmental Support, Educational Assistant, Recreation and Leisure and/or training in the fields of psychology and experience working with children with differing abilities and diagnosis an asset)
  • Minimum of six months' experience working with young children
  • Training/experience/volunteering in a field that relates to the needs of children with Special Needs or differing abilities/diagnosis
  • Experience with G-tube feeding administration an asset
  • Experience working in a licensed child care setting an asset
  • Knowledge of behaviour management theory, strategies, and techniques
  • Only those individuals legally entitled to work in Canada will be considered
  • Ability to use frequent light to medium physical effort: lifting up to 50lbs, bending and stooping
  • Must be able to work outdoors for at least 2 hours daily year-round; may be exposed to heat, humidity or cold
  • All staff working with children are required under the Child Care and Early Year's Act to have a valid standard first aid certification including infant and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) prior to the first day of work
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with families & staff
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
