Primary Duties

The Engineering Technologist will prepare designs and cost estimates for capital electrical projects and support customer connection, DER and EVSE applications in support of a safe and reliable distribution system and its expansion to meet city load growth and customer needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Review development proposals and site plan applications and provide information about the process and requirements for connecting to the distribution system.
  2. Design, document and plan expansion and asset replacement construction projects for major projects for review and approval.
  3. Provide information to developers regarding safety and Code requirements for construction in proximity of the overhead and underground distribution system.
  4. Develop estimates and drawings according to standards and provide input for project budgets and staging.
  5. Act as the on-site contract administrator representative and liaise between all stakeholders on civil works contracts and projects.
  6. Prepare and deliver notices to customers for project work and outages.
  7. Prepare site layouts for construction and conduct field inspections to ensure standards are being met.
  8. Model electrical impacts of proposed customer connections on the distribution system and review financial impacts to ensure customer revenues support any capital expansion requirements.
  9. Prepare Offer to Connect Agreements for customers including cost estimates and responsibility for work.
  10. Review DER Connection applications to ensure they meet requirements and determine their impact on the distribution system.
  11. Examine third party attachments to distribution poles to ensure the system remains secure and monitor transfers and removals to ensure compliance with regulations.
  12. Analyze scan reports, testing and sampling reports to assess equipment condition and create designs for any approved upgrades.
  13. Comply with all health and safety requirements, maintain a safe work environment, report hazards and promote a culture of safety in the workplace.

Education, Certification and Other Qualifications Required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ReCap, CYME Power Engineering software and SPIDAcalc.
  2. Advanced knowledge of electrical theory, the Utilities Work Protection Code, Construction Verification Program, Electrical Distribution Safety Regulation 22/04, EUSA Rules and various electrical safety Codes and Standards.
  3. Advanced ability to read, interpret and produce technical electrical and civil engineering drawings.
  4. Intermediate knowledge of contracts and contract law.
  5. Intermediate ability to use GPS surveying equipment.
  6. Intermediate knowledge and application of the Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications (OPSS) and Ontario Provincial Standard Drawings (OPSD).
  7. Intermediate proficiency with Esri GIS, ArcGIS and ArcMap products.
  8. Intermediate verbal and written communication skills.
  9. Intermediate knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements as it relates to individual, organizational and operational requirements.
  10. Basic knowledge of Book-7 Traffic Control Guidelines.
  11. Basic financial/budget management skills.

Qualifications:

  1. Post-secondary diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology.
  2. Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) or working towards.
  3. 3+ years’ experience in a similar role.

  • Maintain a valid Class “G” driver’s license.
