Job description

Responsibilities

Provide technical expertise, advice and input to the design and construction elements for a deep underground geological repository, including surface and underground infrastructure.

  1. Participate in the development and issuance of contracting documents (EOI’s & RFP’s) and evaluation and selection of contractors.
  2. Manage contracts for conceptual design, detailed design and field design activities.
  3. Manage contractors and their subcontractors: Interface with contractors to monitor performance against work plans and schedules.
  4. Participate in contract budget submission, schedules, estimates, and changes.
  5. Ensure design basis and associated requirements remain valid through all deliverables.
  6. Contribute as required to internal committees and tasks to gather requirements for the design and ensure consensus prior to implementation of design changes.
  7. Produce reports and other documents on design status, work activities and project status.
  8. Appear before government authorities, agencies, regulatory bodies and legislative hearings as a technical expert on repository design activities.
  9. Keep abreast of developments on proof testing and international developments for the design and construction elements on the deep underground geological repositories through technical publications, contacts with internal and external experts in the field, and conference presentations.
  10. Ensure all work activities and programs reflect an awareness of and compliance with applicable regulations and with the divisional and customer safety program.
  11. Participate in NWMO public engagement activities.
  12. Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience

This is a Progression-In Place role. Applicants with lesser experience or qualifications may be considered for a position at a lower level commensurate with their experience.

Requires a 4-year university degree in mining, geological, environmental, mineral or civil engineering. Licensed Professional Engineer is preferred.

Requires at least 6 years’ experience in the mining or heavy construction industry.

Experience with construction and/or mining practices and techniques, including design/CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD), and application of Ontario Mining Regulations in design.

Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team and interact with external contractors.

Experience in project and/or study management within the discipline, including plan development, resourcing, schedule tracking, contract management, risk management, and problem resolution.

Experience in communicating effectively in both oral and written form including excellent professional writing and presentation skills.

Experience in mine infrastructure design (e.g., surface construction, foundations, site servicing, excavated rock management, water management, etc.) would be highly regarded.

Experience with large infrastructure projects including mining, tunnelling or blasting would be highly regarded.

Experience with greenfield construction or development projects and/or involvement in regulatory submissions would be highly regarded.
