Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner (NP)

Manitoulin Health Centre is looking for two full-time Emergency Department Nurse Practitioners to work at each of its Little Current and Mindemoya hospital sites.

The Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner (ED NP) is a self-directed advanced practice nurse, who functions in an expanded nursing role in a collaborative practice model. Working in collaboration with emergency physicians, the Nurse Practitioner manages, directs, and provides comprehensive care for a select patient population in a collaborative interdisciplinary team environment.

JOB DUTIES:

1. Assess, diagnose, and manage episodic illnesses, injuries, and acute exacerbations of chronic diseases within the Nurse Practitioner scope of practice and/or through use of relevant medical directives.
2. Responsible for patients who present to the ER with CTAS level 4 and 5.
3. Assist with CTAS level 1, 2, and 3 patients under physician supervision.
4. Analyze and interpret patients’ histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
5. Provide medical orders to other members of the Nursing Team to implement the care plan.
6. Determine the need for and order from an approved list of diagnostic tests/procedures and interpret the results of such tests, within Nurse Practitioner scope of practice.
7. Complete accurate, legible, and timely documentation of all patients for which they are providing care.
8. Follow up with/refer to physician on-call for all issues that fall outside of the NP scope of practice.
9. Liaison with physicians in providing support to hospitalist role.
10. Provide clinical leadership and guidance to Emergency Room staff and assist Emergency Department nurses as necessary.
11. Act as a Super User for the Meditech Expanse Emergency Department and Order Management Module.
12. Liaise and maintain good working relationships with external parties including policing services and local family health teams.
13. Support Manitoulin Health Centre’s satellite Chemotherapy department as required.
14. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team in teaching other clinicians as necessary.
15. Member of the MHC Emergency Department Committee.
16. Promote a respectful environment.
17. Attend mandatory in-services and commit to professional development.
18. Promote a healthy and safe working environment in accordance with the occupational health and safety guidelines, providing a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
19. Participate in departmental quality initiatives and risk management program.
20. Ability to work cross-site as needed for organizational demands.
21. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Hold and maintain current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in the RN Extended Class.
2. Experience working in Acute Care/Emergency Department is required.
3. Leadership, critical thinking, organizational, and communication skills are required.
4. Strong communication skills and ability to work with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
5. Hold appropriate professional liability protection as per College of Nurses of Ontario requirement.
6. Self-motivated with strong health assessment and clinical skills.
7. Experience working with mental health and substance use disorders is an asset.
8. Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
9. Current NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
10. Current TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course).
11. Current ATCN (Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses).
12. Current CAN (Canadian Nurses Association) certification.
13. Current PALS (Paediatric Advanced Life Support).
14. Triage training as per eCTAS guidelines.
