Job Summary
Dalhousie’s Physics and Atmospheric Science Department is a world-class leader in education and research, offering programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. Reporting to the Administrator, the Electronics Technologist oversees the operations of the Electronics Workshop and provides electronics techniques and expertise to teaching and research labs.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Oversee the operation of the Electronics Workshop which includes establishing safety standards, maintaining an adequate stock of parts and supplies, and ensuring safe storage of chemicals.
  2. Maintain a budget for the Electronics Workshop, mainly used for consumable supplies.
  3. Work from researchers’ specifications to design, build, and test or modify and test a variety of circuit boards and electronic equipment.
  4. Participate in Physics course labs, demonstrate techniques, and act as a resource person on the use of lab equipment.
  5. Repair and calibrate electronic equipment for researchers and students in the Physics Department, e.g., oscilloscopes, multichannel analysers, microcontrollers, and other logic instruments used as measuring equipment, function generators, digital meters, radiation detection equipment, etc.
  6. Provide computer-related services to the department, including installing hardware and software, as well as servicing and maintaining department computer equipment.

Note
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Required Qualifications

  1. Undergraduate degree with seven years’ experience in a related field (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  2. Strong computer skills required.
  3. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  4. Precision electronic and circuit board experience required.
  5. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, initiative, and decision-making skills.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population while being adaptable and maintaining a strong safety focus.
