Position Summary: The Electronics Technician is responsible for performing required diagnostics, repairs and installation of on board vehicle electronic operating systems including but not limited to fareboxes, two-way radios, MDT (AVL) systems, on-board video recorders and Drive Cam on Transit Buses, Specialized Buses, Route Supervisors Vehicles and Service Trucks under the guidance of the Maintenance Supervisor or designate. The Electronics Technician must ensure vehicle electronic operating systems are in operating condition and provide written documentation of repairs to meet Company and Contractual requirements.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

  • Ensures vehicle electronic operating systems including but not limited to fareboxes, two-way radios, MDT (AVL) systems, video recorders on board vehicles are maintained in operating condition
  • Completes scheduled and non-scheduled maintenance on all electronic systems, subassemblies, and control devices
  • Inspects, diagnoses, removes, replaces, repairs on board vehicle electronic systems, equipment, and devices including defective parts or makes changes in a timely manner
  • Uses electronic testing equipment (multimeters, test benches and mock-ups)
  • Reads and interprets schematics, wiring diagrams, instruction manuals, technical bulletins, company policies and parts catalogues
  • Uses computerized service information systems and technical telephone support systems to locate necessary information
  • Plans the sequence of operations to properly install and test main control units and other electronic accessory components
  • Organizes, routes, and secures wiring
  • Tests and calibrates devices and components, performing final installation checks
  • Completes associated paperwork at the completion of each repair
  • Advises on installation and/or service and repair requirements and associated costs
  • Maintains supplies by checking inventory, sourcing vendors, preparing orders and submitting invoices as required
  • Receives inventory, ensures received items correspond to purchase orders and packing slips, inspects for quantity and quality, and assists in resolving any discrepancies including returning incorrect supplies to vendors as necessary
  • Assists in loading and unloading supplies from vendor trucks and places them in the designated areas for easy retrieval
  • Performs periodic cycle counts of supplies, communicates, and documents anomalies found as needed
  • Maintains a safe and clean work area and must focus on safety to reduce the opportunity for injury to self or other employees
  • Demonstrates a cooperative attitude with fellow employees and supervisors while promoting Company values
  • Maintains a professional demeanor and appearance including strict adherence to company supplied uniforms, being properly dressed, neatly groomed and with good hygiene according to Company standards
  • Demonstrates regular and consistent attendance and punctuality in compliance with Company policies
  • Attends all required in-service training, Company required safety meetings and training and other required meetings
  • All other duties as assigned

Working Conditions: The Electronics Technician works in a workshop environment and requires the following physical activities: long periods of standing, walking, crouching and bending, considerable use of arms, repetitive hand-wrist motion, and moving the whole body such as climbing, lifting, walking, handling of equipment and materials and wearing protective safety harnesses where required. The Electronics Technician may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions as well as adverse weather conditions. The Electronics Technician must wear protective eyewear, safety gloves, safety shoes, and proper breathing apparatus when required.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) years of maintenance experience in the repair and diagnosis of electrical components
  • Factory training and certification in electronics/charging systems/understanding schematics/diagnostics
  • A valid Automotive Electronic Accessory (K) Technician’s certificate preferred, or equivalent experience may be considered at the Company’s discretion
  • A valid G Ontario Driver’s License, preferably B or C with Z (Airbrakes) endorsement
  • Minimum of 3 Years of driving with an acceptable driving record

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of electronics to perform inspections, diagnosis, removal and repair of equipment and systems
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
  • Ability to write clear and concise work orders and complete required documentation
  • Must have the approved minimum standard of hand/power tools to perform the job
  • Understanding of hand and power tools
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics
  • Ability to learn and understand diagnostic programs
  • Familiarity with the use of all safety related equipment
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and objectively with little or no supervision
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to plan ahead and schedule work

Wage: $31.63 + 1.00 shift premium (where applicable)
