Since 2001, Kadant has operated as a fully independent public company and is recognized as a leader in the design and manufacturing of a range of products for the industrial sector. Today, Kadant owns a diverse range of independent companies that operate through three segments:
- Flow Control: Fluid Handling and Doctoring, Cleaning and Filtration products for the packaging, tissue, food, and metals industries.

The Opportunity
Location: Richmond, British Columbia
Reporting Relationship: Director of Engineering
Cogent is seeking an electrical engineer or EIT (the Engineer) to join the business at their corporate office in Richmond, British Columbia. The Engineer will report to the Director of Engineering and is responsible for working with clients and designing electrical systems for brownfield modernization and greenfield installation projects.
The successful candidate will have strong communication skills and good technical acumen related to electrical power and control design, from specification to layout, detailed design, and construction support. The Engineer shall have obtained at least 2 years of experience with a systems integrator or engineering firm in a similar engineering capacity. Cogent is seeking a strong technical professional with excellent communication skills that shares the values and commitment to corporate social responsibility that guides Cogent. The Engineer shall be passionate about learning new technologies and systems and should look for opportunities to improve on established processes.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Working with the integration team in designing, developing, and commissioning power distribution systems, industrial IT, and control systems for projects globally, ranging from greenfield installations to plant modernizations.
- Research, design, and develop power distribution systems across industrial facilities.
- The Engineer will be responsible for supporting the administration, revision control, and development of 3D electrical design including room and equipment layouts, cable tray and conduit designs.
- Adhere to all relevant electrical codes and best practices.
- Develop technical specifications for electrical equipment such as MV switchgear, LV switchgear, VFD’s, cables, UPS’s, emergency generators, distribution transformers, distribution panelboards, etc.
- Develop drawings for electrical systems such as single-line diagrams, cable-tray layouts, grounding layouts, lighting layouts, installation standards, etc.
- Prepare engineering documentation such as motor list, cable schedule, conduit list, panel schedule, etc.
- Prepare the technical portion of the tendering package, detailed engineering scope, construction specification, and inspection and test plans.
- Ensure their work is reviewed and approved before releasing to project stakeholders and clients.
- Prepare documentation transmittals.
- Support the audit of contractor request for information (RFI)’s and change order requests for technical validity and assist in quantifying change order value.
- Coordinating and communicating with all project stakeholders including contractors and equipment vendors to resolve technical issues across all phases of the project.
- Proactively identifies risks, provides recommendations, and implements solutions to implement safe and practical design work.
- Follows standardized operating procedures and creates new procedures when required.
- Participates in regular internal meetings to ensure the success of the Technical User Groups and investigates new technologies to advance existing technology and infrastructure.
- Contributing to positive client experience by producing well-presented project material on time.
- Create and deliver technical presentations to project stakeholders or prospect clients.
- Contributes to improving current company standards and specifications.
Qualifications
Candidates will join Cogent with a minimum of 2 years of electrical design experience gained from industrial companies or service-oriented consultancies. Candidates will have previous experience working for a smaller business entity and an ability to easily adapt between engineering and client responsibilities. Additional qualifications include:
Technical
- Excellent working knowledge of AutoCAD or EPLAN as a 2D electrical design tool.
- Proven experience working with design software to create plant-wide electrical designs in 3D (Revit preferred).
- Experience delivering a complete set of project documents including single lines, schematics, cable schedules, load flow calculations, cable sizing calculations, panel layouts, IO lists, etc.
- Experience working with ETAP as a design tool for short circuit, load flow or protection coordination studies is considered an asset.

TRAVEL
Travel may be required to visit project sites and to meet with clients. Travel expectations are project-specific and can range from 5% to 25%. The Engineer is expected to be comfortable working in a dynamic office environment and will be provided with the necessary technology and support to effectively execute regardless of location.
EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS
The successful candidate has completed a diploma or undergraduate degree in electrical engineering or related discipline and/or has obtained relevant industry certifications or designations. Any industrial design or programming certificates are considered an asset. All academic degrees and professional qualifications are subject to verification by an independent third-party service provider.
