Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and manage safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Lead the safety improvement process and implement safety practices throughout the organization.
  • Conduct safety audits and advise employees on safe practices and potential hazards.
  • Train production leadership on safety-related topics and coach employees on accident prevention and safe workplace practices.
  • Create and maintain a communication process to make safety priorities and performance visible.
  • Ensure systems are in place for an effective safety program while meeting regulatory guidelines (federal, provincial, local) such as record keeping, recording, safety statistics, and trend analysis.
  • Understand regulatory requirements for hearing conservation and maintain compliance through process modifications and updates.
  • Maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements for respiratory protection (including but not limited to: medical tracking and clearance, fit testing, training, and equipment).
  • Serve as a primary contact for all safety inspections/inquiries and provide technical support for ongoing problems and safety violations.
  • Support the First Responder Program including recruitment of responders, training, equipment, supplies, and documentation.
  • Understand and comply with all other safety related issues (including, but not limited to; confined space, and Lockout/Tagout).
  • Monitor and coordinate employee mobile equipment licenses and testing (forklift operation, CDL, etc.).
  • Lead the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee. Participate in various safety-oriented activities (e.g., job hazard analysis, ergonomic analysis, etc.).
  • Maintain Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) management system to monitor and control all chemicals on plant site including routine training with employees who work with chemicals.
  • Communicate safety issues to employees and ensure proper procedures are followed and assist supervisors by monitoring employee use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Education, Skills and Experience:

  • BS/BA in a related field (Safety Engineering, Occupational safety/Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, Engineering, Management or equivalent) or at least three years related experience in a similar role.
  • Experience in manufacturing industries.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), presentation skills, strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Working knowledge of Workplace Safety and Insurance (WSIB), and Ontario Safety Regulations.
