Duties: Parks Canada is seeking motivated individuals who enjoy the challenges of a fast-paced work environment. The dispatch coverage area includes Jasper as well as more than 40 other national parks and historic sites across the country. We are looking for individuals with the ability to work calmly and effectively under the pressures of competing work demands, to deal with emergencies and to work shifts including nights, holidays and weekends. Dispatching requires a high degree of precision and accuracy to record and relay information to and from a variety of sources.

Given the nature and scope of this work, strong oral and written communication in English is essential for all positions and additionally strong oral and written communication in French is needed for bilingual positions. For emergency radiotelephone communication, the ability to speak in a calm, clear, regular and understandable manner is imperative.

Work environment: Jasper Dispatch is a 911 emergency call centre for Jasper national park. Known as the ‘first’ first responders, emergency dispatchers are the crucial communications link between our visitors and the professionals who keep people safe and protect the animals and environment for future generations.

After intensive training, your job will be to gather critical information about emergencies, then relay it to the personnel you will dispatch to the scene. You will be expected to follow established procedures and protocols to get the right people, to the right place, at the right time. You will also play a key role in ensuring occupational health and safety for park wardens, mountain rescue specialists, wildlife officers, highway equipment operators, researchers, and other Parks Canada team members. Additionally, you will help our guests by directing their queries, questions, and comments to the appropriate experts.

Intent of the process: This process will be used to create a list of qualified candidates to staff positions with various tenures (temporary, full-time, part-time) in Jasper National Park. Positions to be filled: Number to be determined.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of secondary school or an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience.

EXPERIENCE:

  1. Working effectively alone and within a team;
  2. Adhering strictly to protocols, procedure, and policies;
  3. Dealing with the public and providing accurate advice and information;
  4. Working with computers and various software;
  5. General administrative tasks, such as updating and maintaining operational manuals, communication logs, databases, and reports.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE:

  1. Emergency Medical, Fire and/or Police Dispatch Certification.
  2. Previous radio operator, emergency services, or public safety answering service experience.

KNOWLEDGE:

  1. Knowledge of visitor safety, wildlife conflict, law enforcement, and other emergency procedures;
  2. Knowledge of Jasper national park geography.

  2. Analytical Thinking – Analyzing and synthesizing information, to understand issues, identify options and to efficiently and accurately record information, prepare logs, records and reports using word processing and spreadsheet software.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. You must be willing to work overtime.
  2. You will be required to work shift-work, and/or weekends, and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays as scheduled by your delegated manager.
  3. You are required to undergo and meet requirements for a pre-placement and periodic health evaluation as outlined in Parks Canada Occupational Health Monitoring Program.
  4. You may be required to wear a uniform while performing your duties. In this case, Parks Canada will provide you with the uniforms you require in accordance with the Parks Canada Uniform Policy.

Conditions of employment: Secret security clearance - This position requires a Secret security level. You are required to obtain and maintain this security level throughout this employment at Parks Canada Agency.
