Position Summary

BCIT’s in-house team of Auxiliary Power Engineers is looking for customer service oriented individuals who have experience in the power engineering industry and can demonstrate their talents in our dynamic team environment. This position carries out planned and emergency maintenance, repair and installation of operating equipment, and the safe operation of the Heating Plant and the Pressure Vessels Equipment.

Serving our workforce at our Burnaby campus, placements may vary from a few hours to several months in duration. Flexibility and adaptability are crucial to being successful in a temporary role, and candidates must be available for shifts 24/7. We provide support where employees are absent due to sick leave, vacation, or to assist with heavy workloads. Due to the varying demand for services, there may be breaks between assignments, we therefore cannot guarantee ongoing employment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responding to trouble calls and taking corrective action; this includes troubleshooting problems on a wide variety of systems. The problems are sometimes difficult to identify, solutions are not standard, and many are emergency calls. Priorities are established by assessing the impact on property and public safety.
  • Establishing priorities and requirements for the Preventative Maintenance (PM) Plan, including items that need to be inspected and maintained for regulatory reasons.
  • Conducting preventative maintenance on multiple systems which are interconnected, as per the PM Plan; duties include printing off daily schedule, inspecting, identifying deficiencies and taking corrective action.
  • Estimating labour and materials for renovations, upgrades and projects, including reviewing project drawings, sketches, and specifications and making recommendations for improvements.
  • Communicating with individuals from a variety of departments within BCIT, and external contractors brought in to work on systems, including working with difficult or upset clients, describing problems and explaining the interrelation of complex systems.
  • Continually learning about advances in system and equipment design, advancing technology through communicating with local suppliers, on-the-job training, adapting older systems to work with new components and parts.
  • Staying current on new technology and regulatory requirements including changes to standards and codes related to the profession.
  • Upgrading existing systems to more modern and efficient options.
  • Preparing drawing, sketches, layout diagrams, and estimates for internal projects and work required.
  • Adhering to and promoting safety standards required by regulatory bodies consistent with the assigned work.
  • Maintains an inventory of relevant supplies.
  • Making recommendations and suggestions for improvement to Program Coordinators on various building projects on campus.
  • Operating startup, maintenance, general operation and shutdown of steam, gas, and oil-fired boilers as per the Power Engineers and Boiler and Pressure Vessels Safety Act.
  • Monitors and tests boiler and hot water systems and conducts maintenance on boilers, including yearly rebuilding, pressure tests, inspection of all components and gauges, leak detection, etc.
  • Reading thermometer gauges and computer controls and maintains appropriate records, charts, logs and manuals as required by the Power Engineers and Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act.
  • Providing input to projects as required which includes making recommendations to existing systems.
  • Maintains logs and service records for each boiler as per regulatory requirements to projects as required.
  • Monitors and responds to operational and utility alarms.
  • Performs site wide infrastructure service and repairs within his/her competencies, while operating within the intent of the Power Engineers and Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act as it applies to the BCIT Burnaby site.
  • Coordinating and monitoring the work of contractors to ensure adherence to established standards.
  • May be required to source and order parts, which includes preparing purchase requisitions and maintaining records of work performed.
  • Liaises with the Foreman, Mechanical Trades, Safety and Security, and the on-call Supervisor, as required.
  • Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.

Qualifications

  • A valid Third Class Interprovincial Power Engineering certificate (Journey person status) plus technical education and/or certifications in the relevant building trades industry; plus two (2) years general trades experience plus up to four (4) years current relevant experience in the building trades industry.
  • Ability to assess blueprints and make recommendations for specific trade requirements is an asset. Experience with HVAC systems and DDC is preferred.
  • Must be able to work independently and the proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve related issues in conjunction with the assigned level of skill, ability and education.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to maintain top quality customer service standards.
  • Willingness to maintain currency in the field and learn on the job is essential.
  • Basic computer training and experience is required. This position is required to work shifts.

Please note: These are the minimum required qualifications. Shifts are 12 hours, 7:00am – 7:00pm and 7:00pm – 7:00am.

Salary Range

Salary Range Pay Grade 9, Step 4; $39.41 per hour.

Additional Salary Information

External hires are initially placed at the minimum of the salary range with set progressions to the maximum as per the Collective Agreement. Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.

This position is eligible for a temporary allowance of $2.07 per hour effective your start date and will end as of your appointment end date or ratification of the next BCIT / BCGEU Support Staff collective agreement, whichever is earlier. This allowance is not subject to any general wage increases.
