We are currently looking for a Payroll Manager (Maternity Relief - 18 month contract) at our Corporate Offices in Ajax, ON (Hybrid)

Reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer, this role will manage all aspects of the payroll function for both Volkswagen Group Canada (VGCA) and Volkswagen Financial Services (VWFS). Setting departmental direction, establishing objectives, ensuring compliance with legislation, respective deadlines, company policies, and meeting audit requirements. Responsible for over $54M in annual disbursements.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee and direct Payroll Administrator in the processing of full cycle Canadian payroll.
  2. Partner with 3rd party Tax Advisors on issues related to employees on foreign assignment in Canada; manage monthly payroll for Foreign Service Employees and Outbound Assignees.
  3. Act as Subject Matter Expert on ESA compliance as related to company policies and payroll practices.
  4. Establish and maintain documentation of payroll processes ensuring necessary controls are in place to identify and mitigate risk, leverage areas of improvement and alert CHRO if critical issues emerge.
  5. Develop and implement necessary controls to mitigate risk, protect privacy and ensure integrity of all payroll data and information.
  6. Develop and maintain disaster recovery plan to manage risk in the case of system outages or other unplanned events that would have an impact on payroll.
  7. Manage full year-end process including filing returns with CRA/MRQ, WSIB, EHT, CSST, T2200's.
  8. Oversee and ensure regular and timely reconciliations of benefits and ensure commitments to benefit and pension providers are met in a timely and accurate manner, including regular reconciliations and internal audits.
  9. Keep abreast of legislative and tax changes related to Payroll; interpret and understand provincial and federal payroll tax laws to comply with reporting agencies such as CRA, WSIB, Ministry of Finance.
  10. Work with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure that Payroll services are delivered at best practice standards.
  11. Partner closely with Human Resources and take a key role to ensure company policies are in line with ongoing changing employment and payroll legislation.
  12. Perform highly detailed review of wage and fringe expense in relation to budgeting and management of structural costs.
  13. Provide payroll expertise, advice and guidance to all stakeholders (Employees, Managers, Leadership) in complex and sensitive matters and policy interpretations related to payroll.
  14. Identify areas of improvement within the payroll process and lead the implementation of new processes and systems.
  15. Ensure development, engagement, continuous feedback and learning of the Payroll Administrator.
  16. Plan, prepare and monitor annual departmental budget.
  17. Review and authorize payroll transactions entered by Payroll Administrator to ensure related work is processed accurately and on schedule.
  18. Develop strong business relationships with vendors and external auditors to ensure efficient and well controlled work processes.
  19. Maintain confidential information by adhering to legal and ethical standards.
  20. Competent with Ceridian Dayforce and Kronos systems.
  21. Prior experience with Success Factors implementation is a definite asset.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree/College Diploma and/or equivalent related work experience.
  2. Certified Payroll Manager, National Payroll Institute.
  3. 7+ years’ experience in multi-provincial and international payroll operations and payroll systems operations.
  4. 3+ years’ supervisory experience.
  5. Experience with Ceridian Dayforce is considered a strong asset.
  6. Ability to work in a confidential environment without compromise.
  7. Knowledge of business finance, including accounting principles.
  8. Extremely high attention to detail, strong research and problem solving skills.
  9. Experience with Kronos system is considered an asset.
  10. Experience with Hello Success (SAP Success Factors) is considered an asset.
  11. Ability to multi-task and stay organized.
  12. Must be able to meet tight deadlines and handle competing priorities.
  13. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  14. Bilingualism (French/English) is considered an asset.
  15. Flexibility to work holidays, evenings or weekends if needed for Payroll.
