Drain Bros Excavating Limited is a locally family owned and operated diverse aggregate, road and sewer construction company located in Norwood, Ontario working in the Peterborough/Cobourg/Trenton/Lindsay and surrounding areas. We currently have the opportunity for the following position within our Norwood/Havelock Asphalt and Aggregate Quality Management Team for a Lab Technician.

Job Description

The lab technician position is a full-time position which involves shift work between the Norwood and Havelock labs reporting to the QC Supervisor. The candidate will be responsible for general maintenance/housekeeping of the lab and the safe operation of equipment required to test various hot mix asphalt and aggregates, such as gyratory, sieves, TMD apparatus, and ignition furnace. The individual will be working with CCIL certified technicians sampling, preparing, and testing various road and hot mix aggregate products. The position will require the following:

  • Participate in workplace safety, environmentally sound and health behaviors and objectives that at all times support the Drain Bros Health and Safety Policy/Programs and best practices.
  • Strong focus on financial responsibility while at the same time never compromising the quality of the tasks at hand.
  • Calibration and set up of equipment prior to analysis. Maintain equipment calibration records.
  • Testing of all aggregate and granular material produced at the various Drain Bros locations presenting information in comparison to defined specifications.
  • Housekeeping of the laboratory.
  • Minor maintenance of lab equipment.
  • Acquiring all samples in the field as required, including truck and stockpile sampling.
  • The recording and entry of all the records of quality control.
  • Follow all Quality Control system protocols and report any discrepancies to the supervisor.
  • Operate scale computer system as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the QC Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • A post-secondary education (degree and/or diploma) in a science-related program (Civil, Construction, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science) or related lab experience.
  • Be able to multi-task as required and work well with others and/or independently.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit, climb and use hands to signal and handle equipment. Also occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move anywhere from 50-75lbs; specific vision required by this job is close, distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Must have his/her own transportation and a valid driver license.
  • Experience in materials testing for civil and construction projects.
