You are a dynamic ML / AI expert with either industry or academic experience in leading a team focused on the development, use and adoption of generative AI for biomedical text and sequence data. We are looking for people who can use and extend large LLMs for various applications, are comfortable with relevant engineering and scaling issues needed for use of this technology in a large company but also understand the biology and the underlying methods and algorithms. In our experience, the best candidate for this position are people who are passionate about the use of machine learning and AI to unlock the mysteries of science and change the way biomedical research is performed.

Work Location: North York / Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Hybrid, 2 days / week in office.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Lead a team of AI/ML and software engineers to evaluate, develop, extend and apply advanced ML / AI methods for Clinical Trial design, analysis and optimization.
  2. Develop, implement, test and refine advanced AI/ML methods for the processing, analysis, modeling integration and visualization of large-scale biomedical data including text, imaging and omics data.
  3. Use AI and ML methods for knowledge extraction from text and other structured data and for integrating this data with other types of structured and unstructured data using multi-modal genAI methods.
  4. Be in close contact with our clinical teams to discuss requirements, possible solutions and ways to integrate the proposed AI / ML methods to improve clinical trial design and execution.
  5. Work closely with leading generative AI companies (our vendors) to ensure our products are state of the art and up to date.
  6. Work with developers, engineers, and MLOps to deliver AI/ML solutions to product teams.

About You:

  1. PhD or MSc in computer science, machine learning, computational biology or related area.
  2. At least 6 years of experience in working on the development of methods related to deep NN, LLMs, generative AI or related topics.
  3. Knowledge of the biomedical domain. Knowledge of the clinical trial process is an advantage.
  4. Experience in the use of AI for NLP and text analysis and in use cases downstream of NLP LLMs.
  5. Demonstrated ability to lead a team of data scientists and generate software solutions that are of practical use.
  6. Hands-on AI/ML modeling experience of complex datasets combined with strong understanding of theoretical foundations of AI/ML.
  7. Experience developing deployable code and deploying models in product-focused development under an agile environment.
  8. Comfortable working in cloud and high-performance computing environments (e.g. AWS, GCP, Databricks, Apache Spark).
  9. Excellent written and verbal communication, business analysis, data visualization and data storytelling skills.
  10. Strong interest in the use of AI in the life and medical sciences to improve patient lives.

Candidate Details:

  1. 10+ to 15 years experience.
  2. Seniority Level - Senior. - Team Management position, requires previous experience leading a team.
  3. Minimum Education - Master's Degree, PhD preferred.
  4. Pharma/biotech experience is a must.
  5. Hands-on experience leading an AI product work.
  6. Willingness to Travel - Occasionally.

Ideal Candidate:

Someone who has actually developed AI methods, coded them and had them shipped or used, in the medical / biotech domain. Pharma/biotech experience is a must.
