TELUS Health is in search of a dedicated Indigenous Peoples Counsellor to join our Critical Incident Affiliate Network. This role is a unique opportunity to provide culturally sensitive support and enhance the well-being of Indigenous communities across Ontario, on a casual, contract basis.

The Impact You’ll Make

As a Crisis Intervention & Cultural Support Counsellor, you will:

  • Deliver rapid on-site support to communities in need.
  • Conduct debriefings and provide psychological first aid.
  • Guide post-incident recovery.
  • Offer professional counseling services on an as-needed basis.
  • Support organizational and community well-being initiatives within First Nations (status and non-status), Métis, and Inuit communities.

Responsibilities

  • Crisis Support: Provide in-person crisis intervention including case management, client intake, needs assessment, safety planning, and emotional support.
  • Client Referrals: Seamlessly refer clients to longer-term community support services as required.
  • Community Engagement: Build and maintain strong working relationships with key partners, community groups, and individuals with lived experience.
  • Documentation: Manage workflow of each assigned case and maintain administrative requirements as required by TELUS Health.
  • Public Awareness: Participate in the organization's public awareness activities and client wellness initiatives in the community.
  • Workplace Assessment: Perform preliminary assessments, offer coaching, support to managers, and implement post-traumatic interventions.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, or related field; or Bachelor's degree with equivalent work/life experience.
  • Active membership in good standing with OCSWSSW or CRPO, and valid professional liability insurance.
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in crisis intervention, trauma response, or organizational psychology.
  • Specialized training in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), Psychological First Aid, or similar crisis response methodologies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in trauma-informed care, group counseling, debriefing, and defusing.
  • Deep understanding of Indigenous history, culture, and traditional teachings.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the criminal justice system, child welfare, and community support services.
  • Proven commitment to anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and gender-inclusive practices.
  • Profound understanding of intergenerational trauma and systemic barriers faced by BIPOC individuals.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact sensitively with diverse populations.
  • Strong organizational abilities, including capacity to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other relevant computer applications.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel across Ontario with short notice.
