The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Job Description

Our Load Forecasting and Market Analytics team is looking for a Market Fundamentals and Data Analyst where you will lead, and support initiatives related to improving the business processes related to fundamental market assessments of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES).

As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for analyzing business processes, identifying opportunities for improvement, and developing solutions to help drive growth and success for our organization. Over the course of each project, you will gather and analyze information, formulate, and test hypotheses, and develop and communicate recommendations.

We are looking for a curious analyst interested in learning more about electricity markets and the data & tools that the Forecasting and Analytics (F&A) team uses. The F&A team uses a variety of AESO data sources, both internal and external to the AESO. These data sources require care and attention, and this position will help ensure the data they use is reliable and understood by working with our IT partners to identify, prioritize, and resolve data issues. This position will also help advance the AESO’s Data Strategy as part of the broader Data & Digitalization strategic initiative.

Key aspects of the role:

  • Analyze business processes to identify opportunities for improvement, such as gathering and analyzing data, working with internal stakeholders, and reviewing existing documentation.
  • Understand the business, system, and technical components of AESO to apply tools and templates to provide quality solutions and consistent deliverables.
  • Elicit requirements and identify and analyze improvements to processes. This includes developing and implementing process improvement initiatives to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Develop and communicate recommendations based on their analysis to stakeholders at all levels of the organization. This includes preparing clear and concise reports and presentations that communicate key findings and recommendations.
  • Help advance the AESO’s data strategy by contributing to a variety of areas including data governance, data management, and specific data projects.
  • Act as a bridge between business (primarily Markets) and IT.
  • Work closely with IT partners to identify, prioritize, and remedy data issues or make improvements to AESO data.
  • Maintain and create large, complex datasets that are vital for actionable insights by internal stakeholders.
  • Promote collaboration and teamwork and share information, ideas, and knowledge.

A combination of these experiences and qualities will support your success in this role:

  • 1-3 years of experience in business analysis and data management or a related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, business, statistics, applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, energy management, or a relevant discipline. A graduate degree in these fields will be considered an asset.
  • A strong interest in software and technology and how it can be instrumental in helping organizations understand their data better.
  • Intermediate level of experience in Excel, Python, SQL, Tableau, PowerBI, VBA, Azure, JavaScript and/or ReactJS.
  • Power systems operations and electricity market understanding is an asset.
