Nature of Work: Reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Scholarly Resources, this position is part of a team of eight (8) subject librarians providing support for Durham College and Ontario Tech University. This position is covering a parental leave. New graduates are encouraged to apply for this opportunity. The Liaison Librarian works primarily from the North Oshawa Campus Library, with the option to work up to three (3) days per week remotely. While most work occurs during regular business hours, some tasks such as in-class instruction may require some evening work.

Responsibilities/Accountabilities: The Liaison Librarian will primarily support the Ontario Tech Faculty of Science and programs in the natural sciences in the Durham College Faculty of Science, Engineering, and Information Technology. The support provided by the Librarian includes:

  1. Library Instruction and Support (35%)
    • Developing and delivering information literacy programming; teaching library classes and workshops
    • Creating and maintaining online learning objects, such as research guides
    • Building and maintaining communication between the library and faculty in assigned subject areas
  2. Reference Services and Research Support (30%)
    • Providing general and subject-specific reference assistance in-person and virtually, including virtual reference, scheduled consultations, and e-mail inquiries
  3. Collection Development (15%)
    • Monitoring and assessing the ability of the Library’s collections to meet the needs of students and faculty in the assigned subject areas
    • Selecting, ordering, and updating collections for electronic and physical materials in the assigned subject areas
  4. Library Operations (5%)
    • Contributing to the assigned faculties’ program review processes
    • Working with library staff to create a positive environment conducive to study and research
  5. Communication and Outreach (15%)
    • Promoting library services and resources to the university and college communities
    • Contributing to institutional and community events (e.g., Science Literacy Week)

Required Skills:

  • Developing and managing collections in the sciences; the ability to make recommendations on collections decisions that impact students and faculty members in the sciences
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Strong ability to conduct in-depth reference interviews with students and faculty members
  • Creative thinking and problem solving
  • Intellectual curiosity and demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development

Knowledge:

  • Principles of open science, open knowledge, and open educational resources
  • Emerging trends in the sciences, in academic librarianship, and in information literacy
  • Familiarity with the scholarly communication ecosystem
  • Best practices in the development of instructional materials based on Universal Design for Learning and the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy
  • Best practices in the delivery of reference service based on the RUSA Professional Competencies for Reference and User Services Librarians

Required Education:

  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science, or equivalent

Required Experience:

  • 1-3 years of experience, preferably in an academic library setting
