POSITION: GIS Education Specialist- Land

DEPARTMENT: Cree Geomatics (Information Services)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Cree Geomatics team is looking for an enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with K-12 youth in a classroom setting and on the land. Are you someone who enjoys being on the land and likes to show youth traditional land activities? Our candidate will develop culturally relevant land-based learning materials for our First Nation community schools in partnership with classroom teachers. Materials will reflect the culture, language, and ways of knowing and doing of the Omushkego and incorporate technology methods like GPS, drones, and GIS. The candidate will involve elders who will share their oral history and traditions when delivering land-based learning as well. Training will be provided for the uses of technology.

REQUIREMENTS

  • College Diploma or University Degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Studies, or related field
  • Hands-on professional experience in K-12 education or working with youth
  • Knowledge and skill using computer hardware, software, and printers
  • Organizational and problem-solving skills, as well as attention to detail
  • Strong communication, presentation, and group facilitation skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team, and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people including First Nation staff and members, school staff, teachers, and students (K-12)
  • Ability and willingness to be flexible in order to respond to the changing needs of communities and teachers, and to adapt to flexible hours for training outside of regular classroom hours
  • Ability to speak Cree is an asset
  • Willingness to travel extensively to Mushkegowuk First Nations
  • A strong desire to develop a working knowledge of land and resource issues affecting First Nations
  • Knowledge of the cultural competency of First Nations, along with an understanding of their aspirations, socio-economic needs, stewardship values, and history
