Join Our Team as an Indigenous Engagement Advisor!

Peel Region is seeking a passionate and dedicated Indigenous Engagement Advisor (IEA) to lead transformative initiatives that strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities and drive meaningful change. We are committed to building respectful and reciprocal relationships with Indigenous peoples and ensuring our programs and services reflect Indigenous voices, perspectives, and needs. This exciting role is based in the Office of Culture & Inclusion and will play a key role in making this commitment a reality.

What You’ll Do

  • Community Engagement & Consultation– Develop and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities, advise regional staff on best practices in Indigenous Engagement, and lead consultation processes.
  • Strategic Advice and Guidance– Provide expertise to address health and social inequities experienced by Indigenous people and communities in Peel.
  • Truth & Reconciliation – Lead the development and implementation of Truth and Reconciliation focused strategies and initiatives.
  • Program & Policy Enhancement– Provide guidance on improving programs and services for Indigenous communities, and elevating the expression of Indigenous arts, histories, and cultures in Peel.
  • Public Dialogue & Advocacy – Advocate for and support broader advocacy efforts, including health equity, climate justice, and social equity initiatives.

Who You Are

  • Lived experience engaging Indigenous people and communities, and understanding of Indigenous cultures, governance and ways of communicating.
  • Post-secondary educationin Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences, Equity & Inclusion, Arts & Culture, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experiencein Indigenous relations, education, human rights, or social accountability.
  • Critical understandingof government policies and their impact on Indigenous people, anti-Indigenous racism, decolonization, and indigenization of cultural spaces.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship management skillswith the ability to build trust based, reciprocal relationships.
  • Experience in research and reporting, including assessments of the strengths and needs of Indigenous communities and stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to relay complex concepts/information to internal and external audiences in reports, presentations, and other documents (i.e. grant applications).

Nice to Have

  • Knowledge of or proficiency in an Indigenous language.
  • Public sector experience.
  • Knowledge of arts and culture programs.

In this role, you’ll benefit from the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement that prioritizes meaningful in-person connection. A minimum of two days per week on-site is expected, with additional in-person presence as operational needs evolve. This arrangement allows for a blend of in person and hybrid work that adapts to support both organizational priorities and employee flexibility and is subject to change over time.

It's important to note that your off-site work location must be within the province of Ontario. This ensures that we're compliant with all regulations and policies.
