Job description

J.D. Irving, Limited, NS Woodlands Division, is currently seeking a Lead Hand for our harvesting operations. Operations will take place within Nova Scotia. The Lead Hand will be expected to be on location at our harvesting sites which are located throughout Colchester County, Cumberland County, Pictou County, and some possible travel to the HRM, Digby County, Cape Breton, and Southern New Brunswick. Travel to our District Office in Truro will also be necessary from time to time.

Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of experience leading diverse teams in forestry, construction, or other production environment
  • Knowledge of forest machine operations is an asset
  • Mechanically inclined and able to perform general machine repairs
  • Possesses reliable transportation, a clean drivers abstract and Class 5 license
  • Able to travel to job sites around Nova Scotia
  • Available to work day and night shifts as required
  • Education Required: High school diploma at a minimum

Responsibilities

The Lead Hand will assist the Harvesting Supervisor and Operations Manager in the following categories:

  • Safety:
    • Ensure personal protective gear (PPE) is utilized by all crew members on the job site
    • Ensure the crew follows all safety and incident reporting protocols
    • Participate in monthly safety reporting to Harvesting Supervisor
    • Keep worksite clean using hazard controls
  • Quality:
    • Coach new crew members on JDI operating best practices
    • Perform woods quality checks and provide feedback to operators
    • Ensure strict compliance with Nova Scotia Wildlife Habitat and Watercourses Protection Regulations
  • Production:
    • Report daily production to the Harvesting Supervisor
    • Communicate production targets to operators
    • Review night shift plans with operators
    • Plan float moves
    • Participate in monthly machine reviews including productivity and health
  • Equipment:
    • Call in machine hours weekly
    • Schedule regular machine maintenance and servicing
    • Maintain inventory of spare machine parts
    • Ensure equipment trailer remains clean and tidy
