As a key member of the Ontario Management Team, the Controller position is a hands-on role responsible for ensuring that the Accounting and Finance team provides the services necessary to support the operational and financial success of the organization. Reporting directly to the CEO, the successful candidate will be an articulated and motivated seasoned professional, filled with passion and commitment to help us grow and succeed for the future. The Controller is an expert at building relationships with stakeholders at all levels – both internally and externally and your career demonstrates entrepreneurial achievements.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting and Analysis:
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
- Analyze financial data to provide actionable insights to senior management regarding financial performance, cash flow, profitability, and cost control.
- Ensure the accuracy and completeness of the company’s financial data, including reconciliations and general ledger entries.
- Lead month-end close for all divisions and maintain various schedules such as fixed assets, amortization schedules, month-end adjusting entries.
- Manage multi-location financial reporting, including standardization of reporting and review processes.
Internal Controls and Compliance:
- Ensure adherence to all regulatory requirements, accounting standards, and internal policies.
- Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and prevent financial discrepancies.
- Successfully execute the external audits and implement recommendations to improve financial processes & systems.
- Direct oversight of and intimate knowledge of benefit programs (health, dental, LTD and AD&D).
- Manage Accounting Services (payroll, AP, AR and general accounting) and organize department assignment.
Team Leadership:
- Lead and develop a team of accountants and financial analysts.
- Provide training, support, and guidance to ensure high performance and professional development.
- Oversee payroll processing and tax filings in coordination with HR and external partners.
Systems and Processes:
- Implement and maintain accounting systems and software that align with the company’s growth and operational needs.
- Continuously evaluate processes and systems for efficiency improvements and implement best practices in accounting and reporting.
Cost Management:
- Monitor and control costs across multiple sites, identifying and implementing cost-saving initiatives without compromising service quality.
- Provide detailed financial analysis of waste management operations, customer contracts, and service pricing models.
Strategic Planning:
- Collaborate with the executive team to evaluate financial performance against strategic goals.
- Offer financial insights and recommendations to support business decisions such as mergers, acquisitions, and capital investments.
What will you bring?
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA, CMA, or MBA is a plus.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial management, with at least 2 years in a leadership role, preferably in multi-site or multi-location environments.
- Experience in the waste management, environmental services, or similar industries is preferred.
- Experience managing and overseeing payroll and benefits.
- Strong understanding of financial regulations, and compliance.
- Proficient in accounting software and financial systems (e.g., Power BI, FYI, Navusoft etc.).
- Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with data analysis tools.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong leadership and team-building abilities.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to provide actionable financial insights.

Annual Salary:$115,000 - $130,000
