Job description

Position Description

The McGill University Department of Human Genetics in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff as a clinician-investigator at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

In addition to an appointment in the Department of Human Genetics, the successful candidate will also be appointed to clinical practice in the Department of Specialized Medicine, Division of Medical Genetics at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC).

The Department of Human Genetics is part of the School of Biomedical Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Faculty members pursuing research may have research labs in the main University campus or in the different Research Institutes associated with the McGill Teaching Hospitals.

The Department of Human Genetics is home to a residency program accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, a fellowship program in clinical and laboratory genetics accredited by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists, and a Master of Science program in Genetic Counseling. The Department is proud to host a respectful, multi-disciplinary and inclusive work setting in its multiple areas of activity, which includes the training of a diverse group of students.

The Division offers a full range of clinical activity in Medical Genetics across all age ranges: The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) provides pediatric and adult care, prenatal services and research facilities on a single site. The MUHC offers comprehensive clinical care, research and teaching with the latest technological and diagnostic platforms, in an innovative and stimulating inter-disciplinary environment.

The MUHC is a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to have an established and externally funded research program. Suitable candidates may be considered for the Dodd Q. Chu and Family endowed Chair in Medical Genetics at McGill University. Endowed chairs are one of the highest academic awards that the University can bestow on a faculty member, with some named entities being as old as the University itself. Thus, it is both an honor to the named holder of the appointment and also an enduring tribute to the donor who helped establish it.

Special consideration will be given to candidates who hold a PhD in a subject related to their clinical practice. Areas of particular interest include cancer genetics, adult non-cancer genetics, pediatric genetics and molecular genetics (laboratory certification equivalent to CCMG or ABMGG certification required), but exceptional candidates in other areas of medical genetics are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will participate in all clinical activities including an equal share in call duties for inpatient consultations (currently shared among 10 medical geneticists). Outpatient clinics will be tailored to the clinical or research interest of the candidate.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees). They will also be expected to pursue scholarly activities in advancing clinical care and/or clinical research.

McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.
