Business Overview:

The Fund Treasurer’s Office represents the interests of investors, overseeing financial, operational, and tax matters that affect the funds and their investors.

Role Overview:

As a Senior Fund Tax Manager, you will report to the Director, Fund Tax. You will work collaboratively with various internal and external core business partners to assist with tax-technical matters for all product line ups offered by the Company, including retail mutual funds, institutional pooled funds, exchanged traded funds, mutual fund corporation class funds, and alternative funds and investment vehicles.

You will also provide oversight of the Fund Administrator in their preparation of distribution calculation and tax returns; conduct tax research and analysis on new product launches, new investment structures, fund mergers/terminations and complex securities transactions to ensure tax outcomes are optimized throughout the product cycle, tax risks and opportunities are well understood and aligned. In addition, you will also lead continuous improvement initiatives within the Fund Tax Team to ensure adherence to evolving and complex tax regulations.

Finally, you will lead a small team which is situated within the larger fund tax group reporting to the Director, Fund Tax.

What You Will Do:

Leadership

  • Provide leadership that helps improve the level of efficiency, effectiveness, professionalism and staff engagement
  • Ensure challenging goals and work standards are established and individual performance is recognized
  • Effectively communicate goals and priorities, and actively work with staff to identify career goals and build specific action steps
  • Develop team members to their highest potential, and provide developmental coaching and mentoring for direct reports

Ensure Funds Remain in Compliance with Tax Regulations and that Tax Policies Achieve a Fair Outcome for Investors

  • Lead the development and/or improvement of tax operating policies/procedures to ensure compliance with evolving tax regulations in Asset Management space
  • Manage the review of the following to ensure completion in a timely and accurate manner and fair outcome for investors:
    • Trust funds’ distribution calculations and T3 tax returns
    • Dividend calculations, taxable position, and corporate T2 tax return for the mutual fund corporation class funds
    • Alternative investment vehicles’ distribution and taxable position calculations
  • Manage the review of funds’ foreign tax returns and foreign reclaims in applicable foreign markets
  • Review notice of assessments/reassessments, provide guidance to the team to liaise with CRA to resolve any ad hoc issues and requests

Work Proactively with Product Team to Manage Product Related Tax Matters & Provide Consulting on Other Tax Matters

  • Research and provide tax opinions on issues requested by various internal stakeholders including product, investment compliance, sales and marketing, etc.
  • Provide tax analysis on various types of fund events including large redemptions, portfolio rebalancing, fund mergers, terminations, etc., and assess tax implications for investors resulting from these events
  • Collaborate with management to research and resolve complex distribution issues and security transactions with an in-depth understanding of implications to our investors
  • Carefully review tax disclosure in funds’ simplified prospectus, annual information form, offering memorandum and other regulatory documents to ensure best in class disclosure
  • Assist in preparing materials for presentation to senior leadership, Audit Committee and Board
  • Stay abreast of new tax legislative developments impacting the asset management industry, and assist with implementation of process and procedures to address changes

Fund Tax Operations

  • Document and implement internal control policies and procedures, and ensure all fund tax process documentation is updated regularly to reflect business changes
  • Manage foreign tax reclaims in applicable foreign markets and provide guidance to team to ensure documentations are completed in a timely manner
  • Recommend continuous improvement opportunities for existing fund tax processes
  • Maintain and update changes required in the distribution review tool

Ad hoc Special Projects

  • Assist with non-routine projects and provide tax supports as they arise

What We’re Looking For:

  • Completion of a University degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 7 years of tax experience
  • At least 5 year of related tax experience within the Asset Management industry an asset
  • CPA or equivalent
  • Completion of CICA In-Depth Tax Courses
  • Public accounting tax experience an asset
  • Completion of securities related courses an asset

  • You have in depth knowledge of the investment fund industry and related tax requirements and operational considerations
  • You possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and an ability to convey complex matters in simple terms
  • You are proactive, decisive and self-driven
  • You have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • You have strong MS Excel skills

You will be working on a flexible hybrid schedule as part of Fidelity’s dynamic working arrangement.
